ROUNDUP: Matadors, Foothillers win

2023 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL

 

MOUNT MIGUEL 40, EL CAJON VALLEY 16 (F) – The Braves scored a touchdown in the first quarter on a pass from Darick Dubose to Shane Hopson on a 5-yard slant to cap a 73-yard drive.

The Matadors scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass by Matthew Barton to Braylon Cardwell.

Mount Miguel (8-1) took the lead in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Barton.

Barton later ran the keeper of all keepers, fooling everyone in the stadium on a 1-yard run to the left side. Mount Miguel led 18-6.

Mount Miguel scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter by Barton to Parris Vernon.

Barton threw a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.

GROSSMONT 46, SANTANA 21 (F) — Grossmont led Santana early, 8-7, with a rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Santana scored on a 38-yard run by Tyler Thomas. Linden Benson also scored on a rushing touchdown.

Noah Walker had a touchdown reception from Hudson Herber. Herber added a 50-yard touchdown pass later in the second quarter with under a minute remaining.

Herber threw a touchdown pass to Elias Burlaza in the third quarter for a 38-14 lead.

Grossmont put up another score on a pass later in the third quarter.

Santa scored on a touchdown pass with three minutes to play in the third quarter to cut the lead to 46-21.

Joshua Ferrara had a long interception return for a touchdown.

Cody Bigley had a touchdown reception for the Foothillers.

MIRA MESA 28, CHRISTIAN 19 (F) – The Marauders led the Patriots in a key game for the Patriots’ playoff chances. A win would likely have assure the Patriots a spot in the Division 2 postseason.

Spencer Johnson had a 38-yard touchdown pass for the Patriots in the first quarter’s final minute to draw to within 7-6.

Jacob Morones had a 6-yard run for a touchdown for the Patriots to close the lead to 14-12 following a missed two-point conversion attempt.

Christian drew to within two points in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Johnson from six yards with just two minutes left in the game.

Mira Mesa quickly answered with a rushing touchdown a minute later.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 42, COASTAL ACADEMY 27 (F) – At Seau Field, Coastal led at halftime against the top-rated 8-man team in the county.

Foothills regained the lead early in the third quarter.

Coastal shocked the Knights early with a 21-3 lead on the road.

The Knights outscored the Stingrays, 25-6, in the second half
