Griffins fall, home opener Thursday

ORANGE — The return of Grossmont College women’s softball finds as tough of a schedule as any team n California. However, this week’slate of ballgames is especially difficult.

On Wwednesday (Jan.31), the Griffins (0-3 overall) fell to 18th0ranked Santiago Canyon, 9-1 in six innings. Next up: the home opener today (Thurs., Feb. 1), facing 10th-ranked Cerritos College, starting at 2 p.m.

The schedule gets even more tougher later in the year with three conference games with Palomar, the top-rated program in the stater.

In falling to the Hawks (2-3), Grossmont stayed within 3-1 before Santiago Canyon erupted for six runs in the final three innings, including three in the sixth to call the contest early. BOXSCORE

Grossmont’s run came in fourth following a walk to Gracie Johnston, who had just entered as the relief pitcher in the third.

Johnston would advance to third base, then scored on a sacrifice bunt to first base by Chantelle Quintero.

Meanwhile, the Hawks receuved RBI from six players, including a pair by Yasmine Garcia.

For Grossmont, catcher Kaitlyn Ours collected three of the five hits by the Griffins, which also turned a double play.
