Griffins softball recalls Wrigley Field

FLETCHER HILLS — A little bit of history.
For the 75th anniversary of Wrigley Field in Chicago, the traditionalists lost the battle and lights were installed at one of the oldest ballparks in Major League Baseball.
The feat came 40 years after the Detroit Tigers became the penultimate (next-to-last) team to install a lighting system.
The Cubs, in association with the television network that would display the game, would enter the 20th Century with a home game under the lights on Aug. 7, 1988.
However, as traditionalists would call the “baseball gods,” would not give Cubs ownership what it wanted right away. So in the second inning, the contest was called due to rain.
The official debut game would need to wait 24 hours — on the unique date of 8-8-88; the Cubs were trying to avoid that date for some reason — with the Philadelphia Phillies taking a 7-4 decision.
So why did we inform you of this.
Because the new era of Grossmont College women’s softball, which was slated to play its first-ever home game following an absence of four seasons, was to have been taken place on Thursday, Feb. 1. The Griffins were slated to meet 10th-ranked Cerritos College.
It, too,was postponed because of rain.
