First Griffins win on Johnston’s 2-hitter

2023 GROSSMONT COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

ECS staff report

PALM DESERT — The return of Grossmont College women’s softball took four full years, but the period between victories was even longer.

Too long?

No matter, the streak is over.

The return of the Griffins saw an 11-game losing skid come to an end after Gracie Johnston fired a 2-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over College of the Desert.

The host Roadrunners won the opening game of the doubleheader, 6-5, to also grab its initial win of the season.

Johnson needed to push hard throughout the afternoon for her first victory of the season, posting 10 strikeouts in the scoreless contest.

So Johnston decided the ballgame all by herself with a surprising bung single for the game’s lone RBI in the seventh inning. Second baseman Kylee Knight scored on the game-winning hit. BOXSCORE

In the victory, Grossmont first baseman Dayzee Wong batted 2-for-3, while the game was won on consecutive hits by Wong, third baseman Katelynne Parent, and Johnston.

Note: Grossmont’s last victory came on 21-2 in five innings.
