SAN DIEGO – University of San Diego junior quarterback Anthony Lawrence, a product of Grossmont High, was named the Pioneer Football League’s offensive player of the year on Monday.

Lawrence has passed for 33 touchdowns with only two interceptions this season after throwing for three scores in San Diego’s 41-10 upset rout of 17-point favorite Northern Arizona in the first round of the FCS playoffs last Saturday.

Lawrence leads the PFL in passing yards (3,024), completion percentage (66.5) and passing efficiency (169.3).

In the game against the Lumberjacks at the Walkup Skydome, NAU redshirt freshman NATE STINSON, out of Helix High, had his most productive game of his career with 90 all-purpose yards, 73 of which came on four kickoff returns.

Stinson’s longest kickoff return in the game was 30 yards. He was used nearly as much as a receiving back than as a rusher this season, catching 13 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Lawrence’s teammate Jonathan Peterson was named the Pioneer Football League’s defensive player of the year, as well.Petersen, a senior defensive end, has an FCS-high 15 sacks  this season.

The PFL champion Toreros (10-2) will play at North Dakota State in the second round on Saturday.
