CHULA VISTA – Mountain Empire senior Trevor Elliot is poised to become the San Diego Section’s second all-time strikeout leader when he makes his next start on Tuesday against Ocean View Christian.

On Thursday, Elliott struck out five of the six batters he faced, exiting the game with 399 career punchouts, just three shy of second-place on the career section strikeout list behind Madison High’s Ian Clarkson (402, 2010-13).

Mountain Empire scores a run on Thursday.

The RedHawks took down the Chula Vista Learning Community Cobras, 9-0, in a game called in the top of the fourth inning.

The Cobras came in with an undermanned pitching staff and ran out of pitchers.

Elliot raised his state-leading total to 109 Ks.

Junior Nick Rose hit an inside-the-park home run,

Sophomore AJ Schachner grabbed a hit and an RBI as did freshman Angel Jiminez, who also scored a pair of runs.

Jacobe Noland followed Elliott pitching only 1 1/3 innings, striking out 3 batters.

Noland also stole six bases and scored three runs on three walks. Elliott hit a double.

Elliott still trails the all-time section leader by 96 strikeouts. Depending on the RedHawks’ postseason success, he could still have seven or more games in which to make appearances in the mound. He averages more than 10 strikeouts per appearance this season.

Elliott has a 0.49 ERA this season with a 5-1 record.
