LA MESA – Helix ace Katelyn Wood fired a pitching gem as she fanned 10 Grizzlies on the day in the 3-1 victory over Mission Hills in Mater Dei Invitational action on Tuesday.

Wood not only finished with double-digit strikeouts but only allowed five Grizzlies to reach via base hit over her seven innings of work.

An RBI single by the Grizzlies in the top of the third inning would give them a 1-0 lead.

However, an RBI double by Ta’Tiannah Wright (1-3, R, RBI, 2B) that brought in Lauren Farace (1-3, R) and a two-run double by LaNiah Broom (1-3, 2 RBI, 2B) that brought in both Neviah Conchas and Wright allowed Helix to claim a 3-1 lead.

Wright, Broom, Farace and Tatiana Hernandez-Ahmu provided the offensive punch for the Highlanders.

Helix with the win evens their overall record at 4-4 and has now won three games in a row while Mission Hills suffers their first setback and is now 4-1-2.

The Highlanders will next play at Mira Mesa in a tournament contest on Wednesday at 4 PM.

MATER DEI CATHOLIC 6, EL CAPITAN 2 – In quite a valiant effort the El Capitan Vaqueros couldn’t keep the early momentum as they fell to Mater Dei Catholic on Tuesday afternoon.

Alanna Christiaens with two outs would give El Capitan the early 2-0 lead as she blasted a two-run home run to right field scoring Ciara Bernardini.

Mater Dei Catholic would tie the game in the top of the second inning with a two-run blast of their own and later in the fifth inning homer again to take the lead which they wouldn’t relinquish.

Shelby Vars unfortunately would take the loss for the Vaqueros as she allowed six runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking three.

Bernardini had a pair of hits for the Vaqueros while Christiaens, Aubrey Thorne, Alyssa Fierro, Domonique Garcia, and Kameron McDaniel each had hits.

El Capitan on the season is now 2-2-3 while Mater Dei Catholic who is considered to be the top team in San Diego improved to 7-1. The Vaqueros will next take on Eastlake at home on Wednesday at 4 PM.
