CYPRESS – Cannonball Charlie, a 6 year old “wienerdog”(dachshund) from Fullerton, captured the 27th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener National, held Saturday (July 13) at Los Alamitos Race Track.
Cannonball Charlie survived an early bump from Amber Garcia’s Okja of Tustin immediately out of the gate, then ran through open space over the final 40 yards to win by two lengths in the 10-dog field.
It was the third consecutive medal for Cannonball Charlie, which took a silver medal in 2022, then earned a bronze last summer. Frd[piyr yhe bumping incident by Erxo (owners Chris & Denise Miesner of San Diego), finished in second place, while No. 5 Odin Von Mosey (owners: Cynthia and Daniel Conners from Spring Valley) was among the top finishers.
The record 124 wiener dogs were entered, including a record three dozen from out of state. However, only an entry from Henderson, Nev., was able to reach the final following 10 semifinal races earlier n the day to determine the 10 finalists.
According to a Los Alamitos press release, the winning dog said the expiervce was “Paw-some!”
The event also included the third ammal Doxie Diaper Dash for weenie puppies.
