EL CAJON – Granite Hills needed a real challenge to help maintain its position at the top of the CIF San Diego Section polls.
However, did the Eagles bite off more than they can chew?
Arizona state power Perry High (Gilbert, Ariz.) traveled to town and proved they were bigger, quicker and stronger — albeit, only slightly — to claim a 39-21 decision over the Eagles at The Honor Bowl played at Cathedral Catholic High on Saturday.
The outcome may not have been as close as indicated by the score, as the Pumas mounted a comfortable 29-15 halftime lead despite having two other long touchdowns — one each on offense and a “Pick 6” on defense — nullified via penalties.
Granite Hills also received a pair of stops of senior free safety Parker Vance, who registered a pair of first-half interceptions near the red zone. There was also a sack by Eagles middle linebacker Brayden Wells on a delayed blitz, otherwise Perry could’ve scored 50- first-half points.
Despite the humid conditions at Valley Stadium, Perry was already acclimated to the weather, racing eight plays in a no-huddle offense to grab the early 8-0 lead on a 10-yard Kael Snyder pass to Brody Pace.
Granite Hills, despite just 1 net yard over its first pair of offensive possessions, pulled even by the end of the first quarter.
Eagles quarterback Tristan Diaz conneted wuth Kyler Oberg for 5 yards on a lunging, fingertip grab.
The score was set-up when Luis Huertas’ recovered a muffed punt in the Pumas red zone, setting up a first-and-goal at the Perry 9. Perry bounded back with three touchdowns in the second quarter to re-gain control.
Pumas running back Maddox Ford went over 100 yards on the ground, while Snyder kept connecting with L.J. Walker and others. Jayden Kimling also registered an interception,’
Trailing 22-8 on Pumas TDs by Nate Wheeler, the Eagles posted their biggest offensive play on the afternoon.
Max Turnerus, rushing behind left guard Gabriel Wolf, Turner romped 80 yards untouched down the center of the field to the end zone.
The second half started poorly for the Eagles.
A failed fourth down in the end zone saw the center snap sail over the quarterback’s head for a 21-yard loss. Granite Hills also missed a field goal and had another turnover on downs.
In the fourth period, Turner added a 5-yard TD to cap the scoring.
Granite Hills (2-1), despite the setback, maintains its 21-game win streak against San Diego Section opponents.
Perry moved to 2-0 overall.
