LAS VEGAS – Under the leadership of head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson, the former standout at El Capitan High, San Diego State has qualified for their first NCAA Division 1 national basketball tournament berth in 13 seasons.
In a thriller which lasted three overtimes on Wednesday (Mar. 12), the Aztecs edged the Wyoming Cowgirls, 72-68, for the Mountain West Conference tournament crown and an automactic berth to the nationals.

Under Terry-Hutson, the Aztecs (25-9 overall) npw have the most victories in a season since winning a school-record 27 in the 2012-13 campaign.
Terry-Hutson, 48, was a point guard and shooting guard for El Capitan (Class of 1994), going on to play fpr Texas-Arlington, then a stint of professional basketball with the Polonia Phoenix of Poland in 1998.

It’s been more than a decade to obtain such success after an SDSU administrator made a costly mistanke, firsing long-time women’s basketball coach Beth Burns on charges of sexual harrassment.
Burns was cleared in court, the Aztecs paid a multi-million dollar settlement, and SDSU hoops hasn’t been the same.,, until Wednesday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Aaron Glennm the new head coasch of the New York Jets in the National Football League, added a major piece to hsi coaching repertoire by naming former West Hills High, Grossmont College and San Diego State quarterback Tanner Engstrand as offensive coordinator.
Engsytand, 42, spent the past six seasonin the same pole with the Detroit Lions, helping the club’s prolific passing attack to reach the NFC CC Championship game over the past two seasons.
With the Jets, Engstand will also assume the duties of play-caller. JETS BIO
Emgstrand began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at San Diego under Jim Harbaugh — the current head coach with the Los Angeles Chargers — in 2005. He remained with the ztecs in many capacities, finally becoming assistant head coach, OC and QB coach (2013-17).
Engstrand rejoined Harbaugh at Michigan as an offensive analyst in 2018 before being named the offensive coordinator and runningback coach of the XFL’s DC Defenders in 2020. He joined the Lions the following summer.
Playing under legendary West Hills head coach Steve Sutton in 1999, Engstrand participated in one of the most famour playoff games in CIF-San Diego Secdtion history. Against Rancho Bernardo, the team set a record with 119 total points scored in a first-round loss to the Broncos.
With the Griffins, he was the back-up quarterback to a team that posted a record of 9-2 overall,finishing second in Foothill Conference at 8-1 in 2002, earning a trip to the South County Bowl against Pasadena.
