DOWNTOWN – The hottest pitcher in the Grossmont Conference may surprise you. His cap does not list “GH” on the front.
Steele Canyon senior Hunter Haase extended his run-less streak on Saturday (Apr. 19), shutting out Grossmont over his six innings to lead the Cougars to a 4-0 victory in non-league action.
Haase, who struck out eight Foothillers batters without issuing a walk, has now yielded just a single run over the last 28.0 innings — an earned-run average rate of 0.25.
Grossmont managed to move just a single baerunner into scoring position against Haase.

In the third inning, a lead single and a sacrifice bunt advanced a Hillers runner to second base. However, Haase battled back with a pair of strikeouts toshut the door.
Nick Marcon replaced Haase in the seventh, posting a 1-2-3 frame to move Steele Canyon’s record to 6-10. Following a slow start, the Cougars have won 6-of-10.
Meanwhile, the offense posted a season-first.
Cougars right fielder onah Arens clouted the ballclub’s first home run of the campaign. However, it was an unconventional shot.
Arens smacked a hard grounder into the left field cornerl. Meanwhile, the Grossmont outfield defense was shifted to the right side. By the time the Hillers reached the baseball,Arens circled the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
The two-out shot also brought home center fielder Tommy Rimoldi (lead walk) to undo a scoreless pitchers’ duel between Haasse and a Grossmont “bullpen” day’ the Hillers utilized four different players on the mound. The quartet allowed just five hits.
An inning later, Steele Canyon again scored twice — both unearned — on a pair of errors, plus a pick-off play at first base for the out, but Andrew Bravo hustled home from third.
The Cougars plsy Monday (Apr. 21) at Clairemint before entering Grossmont Valley League play.
Grossmont (9-9) returns to Grossmont Hills League action with a two-game series with top-ranked and unbeaten Granite Hills, starting Tuesday (Apr. 22) atGizoni Field.
The Eagles (12-0-2) own an 18-game, regular season unbeaten streak; the last loss was on Apr. 26, 2024, to Santana, 1-0.
