FLETCHER HILLS – Grossmont College third baseman Nico Newhan drilled his 16th home run of the season, but it was a home run by designated hitter Colby Corlett that broke a 4-4 deadlock, as the Griffins nipped San Diego City, 5-4, in the regular-season home finale at Noel Michelson Field.

Trailing 4-3, the bottom third of the Grossmont batting order came through once again.

BALBOA PARK – The first time Grossmont College visited Morley Field, the Griffins played great — for eight innings. However, the bullpen failed in the ninth inning, but at least it was a non-conference contest.

On Tuesday (Apr. 22), this ballgame really counted — and the8th-ranked  G-House returned the favor.

M.J. Sweeney blasted to two-run homer to right field in the ninth inning, giving the Griffins a framatic 10-9 triumph over San Diego City.

Down 6-1, a 4-run rally in the fifth would equalize the contest st 6-6. But when the Knights pulled back in front 9-6 and time running out, Grossmont crawled back.

In the 8th, runs scored on a wild pitch, then an RBI single by second baseman Noah Manasan to move to within 9-8.

Then in the 9th, Owen Rodgers opened with a singleto left, but pinch-runner Josh Asunsion remained at first while the next two batters made out.

However, one out away from a loss, Sweeney pumped a deep drive to right for the go-ahead runs.

Grossmont relief pitcher Trevor Morgan then completed his 1.2-inning stint by retiring City in order in the ninth to gain the win. Morgan now leads the Griffins in victories with five.
