CITY WESTERN LEAGUE
CHRISTIAN 7, CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 0 – Dominant pitching by the Christian Patriots along with scoring early leads to a recipe of success as they defeated the Cathedral Catholic Dons in City Western League action out at Roma Dawson field on Thursday afternoon.
Christian started the scoring early when Samantha Baca (2-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B) doubled in Keytn Ruis (RUN) who came into run for Kaitlyn Moody (2-3) who led off the inning with a base hit, after Keels Carrizosa 2-3, R) singled to advance Baca to third the next batter Alyssa McCurty (1-1 drove in Baca to make it 2-0. A couple of batters later with one out Pressly Villalva hit a ball deep enough that was caught that allowed Carrizosa to tag up and race home to make, RBI) it 3-0.
The Patriots in the bottom of the third would take advantage of a Don miscue that allowed Ruis to plate which gave them a 4-0 lead.
They would tack on more in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of Lucy Sherburne (1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR) belted a two out deep fly to left field for a two run home run and a 6-0 lead. The Patriots added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Reese Danczak (1-3, R, RBI, 2B) doubled in Baca to round out the scoring.
McCurty who is only a freshman picked up her fifth victory of the season as she allowed no runs on four hits over six innings in which she walked two and struck out seven, Sienna Staite came in and finished things out in the last inning in which she allowed one hit while striking out two.
Christian with the victory snaps the Dons three game winning streak and have won three in a row themselves as they move to 18-4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play and in sole possession of first place. They will next take on the Point Loma Pointers at home on Tuesday April 29th to finish out the first round of league action.
NON-LEAGUE
BONITA VISTA 5, PATRICK HENRY 0 – Natalie Gonzalez struck out 11 Patriots as she limited them offensively to only four hits as Bonita Vista won on Thursday afternoon in non -league action against Patrick Henry.
Patrick Henry would have an opportunity in the top of the second inning to do some damage as Zoe Rutherford led off the inning with a double to center field but unfortunately they couldn’t add anything more in the inning.
Another opportunity presented itself in the top of the third inning when with one out Izzy Irvin singled which was followed by Adeline McDonald singling to left to advance Irvin to second base. However, even after Rutherford was intentionally walked with two outs the Patriots would be denied again as Gonzalez retired the next batter to get out of the inning.
Rutherford would take the loss for the Patriots as she allowed five runs on six hits over six innings in which she walked one and struck out two.
Patrick Henry falls to 8-11 overall with the loss.
OLYMPIAN 6, GROSSMONT 1 – Despite tallying seven hits in the ballgame the Grossmont Foothillers could only push one across in their non-league loss to Olympian on Thursday afternoon.
The lone run for Grossmont came in the bottom of the third inning when Nakhia Lee drove in Skyler Glover to make it 3-1.
Both Lee and Ashley Beard would tally a pair of hits for Grossmont while Saraya Roope, Heidi Villa, and Glover each had hits.
Roope who started for Grossmont would take the loss as she allowed six runs on nine hits over seven innings in which she walked four and struck out four.
Grossmont falls to 6-12-1 overall with the loss.
MATER DEI CATHOLIC 10, HELIX 1 – Despite being able to keep the game close the Helix Highlanders couldn’t keep it that way as they dropped a non-league contest to the NO. 1 team in San Diego on Thursday afternoon.
Helix would score their lone run in the top of the third inning on a Ta’Tiannah Wright double to center field that would score Danette Munoz to pull within 3-1.
Unfortunately, that would be the closest the Highlanders would get as Mater Dei Catholic finally was able to break through offensively with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and would tack on two more in the bottom of the sixth inning to round their score out.
Lauren Farace who drew the start for the Highlanders would take the loss. On the day she would go five innings in which she allowed eight runs on twelve hits, Kaitlyn Woodland came in and tossed an inning in relief in which she allowed two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one.
Helix with the loss falls to 9-5 overall.
