Barrios Outduels Rutherford in Wild West Classic

CHRISTIAN 3, PATRICK HENRY 2 – With both a pitcher’s duel occurring and despite being outhit the Christian Patriots overcame a late rally and on top of the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots on Tuesday afternoon out at Roma Dawson field.

Both teams pitching of Ava Barrios for Christian and Zoe Rutherford for Patrick Henry went inning for inning the first four innings before runs were finally procured.

Christian in the bottom of the fifth inning would finally break through thanks to Ashley Wood who singled in Lily Reyes who came into pinch run for Kaitlyn Moody who led off the inning with a triple, and a couple of batters later with one Alyssa McCurty belted a two-run shot deep over the center field fence for her third home run of the season and a 3-0 lead.

However, things would get interesting in the top of the sixth inning as Adeline McDonald would lead off the inning with a walk which was followed by a two-run home run by Riley Texiera deep over the center field fence for her second of the season and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Despite allowing a base hit the next batter Ava Cornell, Barrios was able to retire the following three batters in order to get out of the inning.

Barrios would earn the win for Christian. The junior allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while walking four and striking out eight. Sienna State who came in and finished things off would earn the save.

Rutherford who was in the circle for Patrick Henry would take the loss as she allowed three runs on four hits over six innings in which she struck out two.

Christian with the victory improves to 19-5-1 overall and 4-1 in league play and remains in first place while Patrick Henry sees their two-game winning streak snapped and falls to 10-12 overall and 3-3 in league and a tie for third place with Cathedral Catholic.
