Granite Hills 9, Helix 1

EL CAJON – Dince the creation of the Grossmont Hills League for thr Spring 3020 season the best record for a league champion occurec in Season 2, when Grossmont went 13-2.

Granite Hills has twice posted 10-2 mark (2021 and 2024(, yet not a single school has gone through a complete league slate with just a single loss or gone undefeated.

Jinx! Granite Hills moved into position to be the first to post a perfect slate.

On Tuesday (JMay 6), the top-ranked Eagles whipped second-place Helix, 9-1, to officially clinch their fourth consecutive GHL championship.

Three of the titles were outrightl Granite Hills shared the 2023 crown with Santana.

In thoise four season, the troops of head coach James Davis posted a 37-8 (.822) record.

The streak of four straight titles moves Granite Hills within one of its own mark of five (2014-18), capped by final day of upset in 2018, resulting in a 3-ywat tie for first with Helix and Grossmont. TABLES OF CHAMPIONS

Game Stuff

Leading 3-1, the Eagles tallied six times in the fourth to start an early celebration.

Shortstop ommy Entrekin registered four RBI, including a 2-run triple to right field in the fourth.

Helix’s run came in the top of the frame, as Romeo Briones accepted a one-out walk, then moved around the bases on an error, then an RBI single by shortstop Ben Williams.

Granite Hills (17-0-2 overall, 9-0 GHL) closes the regular season with road contests at El Capitan and Grossmont. The Senior Day ballgame is slated against Valhalla on Thurs. May 15.

Helix (13-11, 5-4 GHL) meets the same trio — in a different order — needing two victories to clinch at least a share of second place.

 

El Capitan 5, at Valhalla 3

RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The same story line keeps occuring to the El Capitan Vaqueros: when they commit errors, they lose; when they doj’t bobble the baseball, they win.

On Tuesday (Nay 6), the Vaqueros did both.

Following ealy errors to give Valhalla a 2-0 lead, the Vaqueros cleaned up the glove-work and started swinging the bats, registering 10 hits to rally past the Norsemen, 5-3.

Branden Hawkins drove home a pair of runs for the Vaq Attack, including a double.

David Vera also stroked an RBI double, while eth Walker scored twice.

Valhalla center fielder Trevor Lough collected a pair of RBI basehits. The later came on a bunt in the seventh, which brought the potential game-tying runs on base and the game-winningrun ti the plate.

However, El Capitan reliever Evin Padilla survived a game-ending line drive by Landon Swain, which landed in the glove of Walker at third baseman.
