CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Keels Carrizosa
CHRISTIAN 6, POINT LOMA 4 (8 INN.) – Softball like baseball is a stupid game in that the game can drive you crazy and also provide life lasting memories. Well on Thursday the game of softball provided one such life lasting memory as junior Keels Carrizosa belted a two run home run over the center field fence that scored Samantha Baca to give the Christian Patriots a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as they claimed the road victory in a winner take all showdown for the league crown.
Early on though things weren’t looking good for Christian as Point Loma behind a sacrifice fly by Leyton MacPherson would score a run, Ella Poulin would drive in a pair of runs and Nanakp Schroth would drive in a run on a ground ball out of which all would lead to them jumping out to a 4-0 lead.
Offensively the Patriots would finally break through against the Pointers in the top of the fourth inning when Kaitlyn Moody singled in Tyler Krystek to make it 4-1. They would cut the deficit in half thanks to Lucy Sherburne in the top of the fifth inning when with two outs she was able to single in Carrizosa.
Still trailing and down to their final at-bats the Patriots started off the top of the seventh inning with a hit by pitch that was unfortunately wiped out by a double play. Now with the two outs the next batter freshman Pressly Villalva worked the count before ripping a line drive to left field for a double, Sherburne followed with a base hit that allowed Villalva to advance to third base. Now with runners at the corners the next batter Krystek after working the count into an 8-pitch at-bat would rip a base hit that scored Villalva and on the play the ball was misplayed allowing Sherburne to come around and score to tie the game up at 4-4.
Leading by a score of 6-4 the Patriots made a pitching change and brought in their ace Ava Barrios to finish things off. After a catcher’s interference call that allowed the lead batter to reach the next three batters would be retired in order. Barrios would strike out the next two batters and get the last batter to ground out to end the game.
Christian with the win moves to 21-6-1 overall and 6-2 in league play to claim the winner take all contest and the City Western League. On the other side Point Loma sees their five game winning streak end and finishes the regular season 21-6-1 overall and 5-3 in league play and a tie for second place with Cathedral Catholic who won their game over Patrick Henry.
The City Western League Championship is Christian’s second league crown in a row as they claimed the City Eastern League last year when they finished with an 8-0 record.
Both Christian and Point Loma will now wait to see where they will end up in the playoffs for their respective divisions. As of right now the Christian Patriots sit in the four spot of the Open Division as the top 8 teams make the Open Division while Point Loma who is in the top spot for Division II will more than likely be the top seed and will have a bye and home field advantage.
CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 10, PATRICK HENRY 2 – It just wasn’t the Patrick Henry Patriots day as the Cathedral Catholic Dons jumped out early and never looked back in their victory on Thursday afternoon to finish out the regular season.
Cathedral Catholic early on the top of the first inning would jump out to a 4-0 lead and later in the top of the fourth inning would score four more runs to take an 8-0 lead.
Patrick Henry though in the bottom of the fourth inning would get on the board when Adeline McDonald belted a two-run home run over the center field fence to make it 8-2.
Mimi Botticelli would earn the win for the Dons. On the day she allowed two runs on five hits over four innings in which she walked two and struck out seven.
For the Patriots, Zoe Rutherford took the circle and would take the loss as she allowed ten runs on eleven hits over five innings in which she walked two and struck out five.
Offensively for the Patriots, Brianna DeGuzman, Katie Krewson, Angelina Mazon, Stephanie La, McDonald, and Hailey Griffin each tallied hits in the contest.
Patrick Henry who has now dropped three in a row finishes the regular season 10-14 overall and 3-5 in league play while Cathedral Catholic finishes 16-10 overall and 5-3 in league.
Both teams now wait to be seeded in their respective Divisions for the playoffs. As of right now the Dons are in the fifth spot in the Open Division while Patrick Henry is currently in the ninth spot in Division One.
