Frosh McCurty bats, pitches, Christian to SoCal regional finale

EL CAJON – Based on her status as a freshman, not much early-season success was was expected from Christian High utility player Alyssa McCurty. And her numbers proved it, batting just .200 (3-for-15) out of the gate.

But look at the freshman go.

McCurty raised her batting average to .600 during the playoff to .643 (9-for-14), including a 3-for-3 effort which featured the game-winning hit, lifting the Patriots to a 1-0 triumph over Monarch of Porterville Thursday’s (June 5) semifinals of the CIF state championships in the outh Regional semifinals, held at Roma Dawson Field.

McCurty drove home senior second baseman Tyler Krystek  in the bottom of the sixth inning for the lone run of the contest. Then the frosh was placed in the pitching circle foe the seventh, only surrendering a two-out single to the Marauders in garnering the save.

The top-seeded Patriots (24-8-1) will host the Southland championship game at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Roma Dawson Field, but the opponent has yet to be determined.

In the Division 2 lower bracket the game between Eastlake and West Lake (Westlake Village) was postponed because of what school officials declared was esxcessive travel — they played the first round in Bakersfield. Thus, CIF state official granted a 24-hour reprieve to Friday.

. The teams will attempt to try again on Friday back on the far west end of the San Fernando Valley.

Monache junior pitcher Sophia Martinez carried a 2-hit shutout — both hits by McCurty — through five innings, but the Patriots solved her in the sixth.

Then with two down and an open base, the Marauders elected not to walk McCurty, so she dropped her third basehit into center field for the eventual game-winning RBI.

Meanwhile, Christian utilized three pitchers to complete the composite shutout.

Ava Barrios tossed the first four frames, then Patriots head coach George Gentry elected to give Monache  (18-7-1) a different look by inserting sophomore Sienna Staite.

However, once the run was scored, Gentry went with McCurty to close., finishing the 4-hit shutout.
