SPRING VALLEY – When Monte Vista takes the field for its football opener against Crawford at Monarch Stadium on Aiug. 22, Page Culver will establish a Grossmont Conference rercord.
The school announced Culver will take over for retiring Ron Hamamoto as head coach, his third stint leading the Price.
Culver will become the3 first East County coach to operate the same program fdor the third time.
Previously, Culver operated the Monarchs for one seson, when Ed Carberry took Sabbatical for the 2000 campaign.
When Carberry left for good after 2003 to became coach at Mt. San Jacinto and Southwestern community college, Culver ran the Monarchs for 8 seasons (2004-11).
In the ensuing decade-plus. Culver served as a teacher and administrator at Monte Vista — when his name was called upon yet again.
Holding the title as a school’s head coachon two occaqssions isn’t that uncommon. Grossmont High holds a pair of major examples in Pat Roberts (19687-81 and 1997-98; 16 total seasons) and Judd Hulbert (1987-93 and 2005-07; 10 total seasons), but three times is a rare oc·cur·rence anywhere is high school athletics.
Culver’s top Monarchs ballclub came in 2004, racing to a Grossmont South League championship at 5-0, caoturing 11 straight cinbtesrt ubnti finally falling to Valley Center, 24-22, in the CIF-San Diego Sectionn Division 1 semifinals to finish at 11-1 overall.
Culver joined the as an instructorschool in 1995, coming off his 30th year at Monte Vista. He also served as an assistant football coach for The Bishop’s School (2011-24)
Culver earned his Masters Degree out of zusa Pacific University in 1999.
Monarchs football is coming off a 10-6 campaign, capturing the CIF state Division 5 chaampionship before getting nipped in the state title gamne to Tuolumne of Summerville, 38-21. played at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
