EL CAJON – In nearly any other season, Valhalla High senior Mace Wheeler, a left-handed hitting catcher, would be named the East County Player of the Year.

However, with the unappreciated success of Granite Hills becoming the first ballclub in the 60-plus year history of the San Diego Section to become CIF champion with an undefeated record, players from the Eagles shared the top-spot individual trophy.

No problem, with an array of awards and honors for Wheeler continue to arrive from various directions.

With a baseball scholarship to Santa Clara of the West Coast Conference in hand, Wheeler, the runaway Grossmont Hills League batting champion, has been named to the All-California state team.

CalHiSports, which has covered high school sports in the state for more than 50 years, named Wheeler as one of the three catchers to the all-state first team among medium-szie schools. Wheeler was also the lone selection from the Southland.

Wheeler posted one of the century’s top batting averages in the Grossmont Hills or Grossmont South leagues, batting a stellar .493 to capture the batting croewn by more than 60 points.

Wheeler was followed by Tommy Entrekin (.438) of Granite Hills, who shared the East County Plaer of the Year award with teammate Brenden Lewis.

Due to the loss of more than a dozen seniors from 2024, Wheeler only had one player-of-note batting around him in on the Norsemen line-up card, so he was walked more than 30 times. Thus, his on-base percent reached surpassed .700.

Wheeler also finished third in home runs (6), trailing only Lewis (8) and Entrekin (7). Wheeler was also fifth in runs batted in, a rearkable feat considering Valhalla finishing in a tie for fourth place in GHL play.

At Valhalla, Wheeler was coached by his father, Ryan Wheeler.

Santa Clara is coming off a disappointing season, going 20-30 overall (7-17 WCC), The Broncos went 3-1 vs. UC San Diego, then 1-2 against University of San Diego.

The 2026 series with the USD Toreros will be held in San Diego (dates TBA).
