SPRING VALLEY – Monte Vista looked deeper and more versatile than a year ago, and a sophomore defender provided the exclamation point.
Sophomore standout Daesean Jenkins intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns in his first varsity game, powering the Monarchs to a 36-13 season-opening win over the Crawford Colts on Friday night.
While Jenkins’ pick-sixes helped slam the door, Monte Vista built its advantage with a balanced attack and timely defensive stops.
The Monarchs struck first when quarterback Derrick Taylor connected with Rashawn Florence on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Instead of kicking, Monte Vista executed a fake PAT, with kicker Juan Duran flipping the ball for a successful conversion and an 8-0 lead.
Running back Deon Hunter extended the margin with a 20-yard scoring run to make it 14-0. The Monarchs’ defense then delivered a critical goal-line stand late in the first half, turning away the Colts just before intermission.
In the second half, Monte Vista’s defense continued to dictate. Jenkins, inserted into duty in his first varsity outing, returned not one but two interceptions for touchdowns to put the contest firmly out of reach.
The Monarchs closed out the scoring with another rushing touchdown and a two-point run to finish with 36 points. Crawford added two second-half touchdowns, but Monte Vista’s early command and defensive playmaking kept the outcome in little doubt.
“Deshawn’s returns were a huge spark for us,” Monte Vista head coach Page Culve said. “Changed the entire game. Derrick Taylor played well, made some good throws when he needed to, he did a great job of running the offense. He has matured greatly as a QB. Deon Hunter and Dupree Flenoid had solid nights carrying the ball. Rashaun Florence had some nice catches including one for a TD. He also played well on defense.
“Defensively, Randy Terrell played well, putting pressure on the QB. Our three inside linebackers that rotate played very well. Made great reads and found the ball. Daygo Rios Sanchez, Brayden Silie, and Gio Lopez, and the rest of the team, played hard and with great energy. Like all week one games, we have some things to clean up, but over all very proud of the young men on our team.”
