CHULA VISTA – Redshirt sophomore quarterback Brayten Silbor, a Chaparral High (Scottsdale, Ariz.) product, delivered a standout performance in Southwestern College’s thrilling season-opening victory on Saturday night.

Silbor threw for three touchdowns and scored the game-winner himself on a keeper in the closing minutes, lifting the Jaguars to a dramatic 26-24 win over College of the Canyons at DeVore Stadium.

The Jaguars led for most of the night, but the Cougars mounted a late surge to take their first lead of the contest midway through the fourth quarter. That set the stage for Silbor, who calmly engineered a decisive drive with under five minutes remaining.

On a crucial 3rd-and-long, Silbor connected with Nic Cline, the former Torrey Pines standout, for a 22-yard strike that advanced the ball into Cougar territory at the 36. Moments later, redshirt freshman running back Caleb Blocker, out of Katy, Texas, broke loose for 11 yards down to the 24.

Facing another third down with just over three minutes to play, Silbor found another Chaparral connection, hitting Jamarei Ashby-Phan for a clutch reception to the 13 with 2:38 left.

The Jaguars’ offensive line then took control, paving the way for Blocker to grind down to the 1-yard line at the two-minute warning. After a setback on first down, Silbor pulled the ball back on a read option and strolled untouched into the left side of the end zone, giving Southwestern the go-ahead score with 1:27 to play.

Silbor’s poise under pressure capped off a four-touchdown night—three through the air and the game-winner on the ground.

College of the Canyons had one last chance in a frantic two-minute drill. Cougar quarterback Jazel Riley IV pushed the ball to the Jaguar 29 on a late completion, then scrambled to the 11 with just seconds left. But the potential game-winning 28-yard field goal attempt by Canyons’ left-footed kicker sailed wide right as time expired, sealing the Jaguars’ victory.

Southwestern’s defense also came up with big plays throughout the night, including an interception by former El Capitan star Chance LaChappa.

With their season-opening win, the Jaguars showed both resilience and firepower, highlighted by the steady leadership of Silbor, who delivered in the game’s biggest moment.

Silbor was 27-of-38 for 287 yards and three touchdowns.

Ashby-Phan added 92 rushing yards on just six carries, including a 65-yarder, while also catching four passes for 80 yards. Cline contributed two grabs for 38 yards and a touchdown, and Israel Garcia-Rotolo and Israel Evans each added TD receptions.

The Cougars nearly spoiled the Jaguars’ celebration behind Riley (122 passing yards, 107 rushing).

Southwestern linebacker Jeremiah Jones recorded six tackles, while the Jaguars collected four tackles for loss as a unit.

With the win, Southwestern (1-0) showed both offensive firepower and grit under pressure, with Silbor proving to be the steady hand at the controls.
