Grossmont 36, Westview 14
LA MESA — The Grossmont Foothillers look like a team ready to end a 20-year league title drought.
Behind a fast start and another strong performance from quarterback Tyler Holmes, the Hillers rolled past Westview, 36-14, on Friday night to improve to 2-0.
Holmes continued his impressive opening stretch with 100 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus 76 rushing yards and another score. Through two games, he has six touchdowns with no interceptions while also leading Grossmont with 219 rushing yards.
“Defense pitched a shutout through two and a half quarters,” said Foothillers head coach Anthony Lawrence.
Grossmont tried to seize momentum immediately, opening the game with an onside kick. Though Westview recovered, the Wolverines managed just 15 yards before turning the ball over on downs, setting up the Foothillers’ first scoring drive.
Holmes hit Jonah Martinez on a deep ball to the Westview 30. On fourth down, A.J. Hooker powered ahead for a first down at the 14. Two plays later, Holmes found Randy Ballard for the touchdown. Hooker added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
On the next drive, sophomore Corbin Dow scored on the ground to make it 16-0, with Holmes running in the conversion.
Early in the second quarter, Westview’s punting game imploded. A snap sailed over the punter’s head and, after a desperate attempt to kick the ball, it bounced straight into Grossmont defenders. Colton Burke scooped it up and scored his second special teams touchdown in as many games, pushing the margin to 22-0.
Holmes later added a 2-yard rushing touchdown before halftime, making it 30-0.
In the third quarter, Holmes connected with Kenny Krauss for a 71-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 36-0 with under seven minutes left in the period.
That was more than enough cushion for a Grossmont defense that stifled Westview until late in the game.
Westview finally broke through with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Micah Davis to cut the deficit to 36-7. The Wolverines added a 63-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter to make it 36-14, but Grossmont’s lead was never in jeopardy.
Grossmont nearly tacked on more points after Logan Heffley hit Krauss for a long gain to midfield and Isaiah Lababit broke free down to the Westview 20. But the Wolverines recovered a fumble at their own eight-yard line to halt the drive.
Holmes finished with three total touchdowns. Krauss and Ballard caught scoring passes, while Dow led the ground game with 67 rushing yards and a touchdown. Burke’s blocked punt return for a score capped another well-rounded team effort.
With two decisive wins to open the season, Grossmont looks ready to push for its first Grossmont League championship since 2005 — and is knocking on the door of the county’s Top 25 rankings.
But first, the Eagles have a tough road test next week when they hit the 52 to go face the La Jolla Vikings, which beat Patrick Henry, 52-14 on Friday, in a similar fashion to Grossmont’s win over the Patriots in Week 1.
