SAN DIEGO — Santana’s defense has allowed just one touchdown through the first two games of the season, and the Sultans used that stingy effort on Friday night to earn a 14-7 win at Crawford.
The first quarter ended scoreless as both defenses forced turnovers.
With 2:29 left in the opening period, Crawford cornerback Zydan Idris had intercepted a pass o stop a drive and set up the Colts at their own 15-yard line.
Santana answered in the second quarter when defensive back Denton Goar picked off a pass and returned it to the Crawford 45.
The Sultans converted later in the quarter as Miller threw a swing pass out of the backfield to running back Kolten Thornton, who carried it in for the game’s first points and a 7-0 lead.
Crawford created another takeaway moments later when defensive tackle Eliezart Valle recovered made a strip-sack and recovered the fumble at the Colts’ 40-yard line.
Santana added to its lead before halftime as Miller found receiver Sean Gardinera for a 20-yard touchdown with 58 seconds remaining in the second quarter, putting the visitors ahead 14-0 at the break.
Crawford finally broke through in the third quarter. Junior quarterback Xavian San-Nicholas entered the game and broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 14-7.
The Colts’ defense set up a chance to tie the game late when cornerback Damian Monroy had an interception with 5:59 left, but the Sultans’ defense held firm to close out the win.
For Santana (2-0), Miller finished 17-of-23 passing for 150 yards with two touchdowns.
Julian Mayers totaled 103 yards — 49 on the ground and 54 receiving on two catches, and senior lineman Rex Rumsey helped pave the way for a Sultan running game that averaged 8.4 yards per carry.
Thornton caught eight passes for 35 yards and a touchdown, while also making six tackles on defense.
Caleb Carnes had four receptions for 33 yards.
On defense, Jordyn Gillissie recorded two sacks and sophomore Tatum Morehouse posted a team-high eight tackles.
Santana, which has allowed only one touchdown through two games, will travel to face Hilltop next week as the Sultans look for back-to-back road wins for the first time since their mythical championship season in the pandemic year.
