EL CAJON — In a season opener that showcased both offensive firepower and defensive discipline, Grossmont College rolled to a 64-0 victory over Compton on Saturday afternoon at home. While the Comets struggled to establish any rhythm, the Griffins demonstrated why there is cautious optimism about the program in Mason Mitchell’s second season as head coach.
Quarterback Mel Spicer IV led the charge in the first half, accounting for six touchdowns and nearly 300 yards of total offense before sitting out the second half. Spicer completed 17 of 23 passes for 298 yards and five touchdowns while adding a 32-yard rushing score.
Jordan Benton emerged as a go-to target, catching three touchdown passes and consistently moving the chains.
Ayden Billups and Jaden Moore also contributed scoring receptions, while the running game — led by Myles Norman and Darick Dubose Jr. — added balance and kept Compton on its heels.
Grossmont wasted no time asserting control as Spicer orchestrated a methodical 49-yard march, connecting with Benton for a 22-yard touchdown. The Griffins missed the extra point, but the lead was established quickly. Compton’s offense struggled to respond, managing only a few yards before punting back to Grossmont.
The Griffins struck again almost immediately.
Spicer and Benton hooked up for a 13-yard touchdown pass just over a minute later, with Tyler Haley adding the extra point.
On the next possession, Spicer threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Billups and then capped the first quarter with a 32-yard scoring run of his own, giving Grossmont a 27-0 advantage.
Grossmont carried the momentum into the second quarter.
Spicer found Benton on a seven-yard touchdown pass, though a two-point conversion attempt by failed.
On the next series, Dubose Jr. punched in an eight-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a three-yard touchdown pass from Spicer to Moore. Norman then broke free for a 42-yard rushing score, pushing the Griffins to a 54-0 lead before halftime.
With the game firmly in hand, Spicer and other starters were sidelined for the second half, giving backups valuable playing time.
Gannon Daoedsjah contributed a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, while Tyler Haley added a 36-yard field goal in the fourth, completing the 64-point rout.
Grossmont’s defensive unit was equally impressive, limiting Compton to just 41 total yards and forcing a turnover.
The Griffins recorded seven tackles for loss, consistently pressuring the Compton backfield and shutting down both the passing and running games.
Compton failed to convert on eight third-down attempts, highlighting the Griffins’ ability to control all phases of the game.
While the lopsided score reflects a mismatch on paper, Grossmont’s execution offers a glimpse of a program trending in the right direction. The Griffins’ offense was efficient and balanced, the defense was opportunistic, and the depth of the roster allowed for a smooth rotation of players.
Next week, Grossmont travels to face Southwest LA in its first road contest of the season.
The Griffins will look to carry the confidence and sharp play from Saturday’s opener into a tougher matchup.
Spicer’s dynamic first-half performance and Benton’s reliability in the receiving game give the offense a clear identity, while the defensive front looks poised to set the tone in every game.
