Unstoppable Mavs stun host Matadors

La Costa Canyon stuns Mount Miguel with dominant road win

SPRING VALLEY — This was a bit of a stunner. Not that La Costa Canyon won Friday night’s matchup of county top-10 teams, but that the No. 6 Mavericks did so in such dominating fashion on the road. LCC scored on its first seven possessions and defeated No. 7 Mount Miguel 45-13.

The Mavericks (2-0) opened the game with a jolt when Coby Herman raced 62 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first series, giving LCC a 7-0 lead just one minute in.

After stopping the Matadors on downs, Quinn Roth connected with Jackson Maggiore for a 10-yard touchdown pass to extend the margin to 14-0 with under six minutes left in the first quarter. Roth and Maggiore then hooked up again, this time on a 31-yard strike with less than a minute to go in the opening period, as the Mavericks built a 21-0 advantage.

La Costa Canyon’s defense contributed in the second quarter, with Justin Lee recording a key sack to end a Mount Miguel drive. Herman capped another LCC possession with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, and just before halftime, Luke Ivy powered into the end zone from 5 yards out to make it 35-0 at the break.

The Mavericks kept rolling in the third quarter. Maggiore added a 2-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 42-0 with under four minutes left in the period. Moments later, an interception set up a short field and a field goal, pushing the lead to 45-0 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.

Mount Miguel finally broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring with under nine minutes to play to trim the deficit to 45-7.

Brandon Arrington added the Matadors’ second touchdown later in the period to make it 45-13.

Senior Malachi Jackson led Mount Miguel with fie solo tackles, while Matador junior Dominic Lopez had nine total stops.

Roth finished the night completing 11 of 14 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. Maggiore was his top target, catching five passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a short score. Herman totaled 131 yards rushing and receiving and scored twice.

The game was billed as one of the marquee matchups of the week, but the Mavericks’ balance on offense and stingy defense kept Mount Miguel from ever finding momentum. The Matadors (1-1) were coming off a late-afternoon lockdown on campus due to an altercation reported at 3:40 p.m., and they came out uncharacteristically flat in the early going.

Mount Miguel rushed just eight times for 5 total yards.

Next week, Mount Miguel will travel out of section to face the Loyola Cubs (1-1). The Cubs defeated the Matadors, 46-38, last season in Spring Valley.
