SAN DIEGO – Steele Canyon extended its season-opening winning streak to three games with a 35-9 victory over Morse on Friday night, marking the Cougars’ best start to a season since 2019 when they started the season 9-0.
Morse drew first blood in the opening quarter when Superior Garror powered in a touchdown run.
Steele Canyon responded quickly, with quarterback Gavin Caha finding Jacob Henton on a 30-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead with under five minutes left in the first quarter.
Junior Abel Lopez added a short 3-yard touchdown run later in the quarter to extend the lead to 14-3.
The Cougars continued to pull away in the second half.
Lopez scored again on a six-yard run with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter, giving Steele Canyon a 21-3 advantage.
Caha then connected with Josiah Stocker on a 14-yard pass, as Stocker flared out from the slot and turned a short reception into a touchdown to push the lead to 28-3.
Steele Canyon’s scoring was completed when Caha added another touchdown pass later in the game, while Ace Woolf converted all five extra points.
Morse managed a final touchdown by Superior Garror.
On the stat sheet, Caha completed 11 of 16 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Lopez led the ground game with 56 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Stocker led all receivers with 108 yards and a touchdown on five receptions, and Jacob Henton added 86 yards and a score on four catches.
Steele Canyon finished with 321 total yards and benefited from 60 yards on a kickoff return by Stocker.
Steele Canyon’s defense limited Morse to 163 rushing yards on 35 attempts and 86 passing yards. The Cougars collected 50 total tackles, led by Vincent Pryor with eight stops.
Morse was paced by Garror, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and added 86 passing yards. Ah-lijah Parks contributed 55 receiving yards. The Tigers totaled 249 yards of offense. Defensively, Garror led Morse with 12 tackles, while Gael Diaz recorded the team’s lone sack.
With the win, Steele Canyon remains unbeaten at 3-0 and will travel next week to face Rancho Christian of Temecula. The Cougars, appearing stronger after three straight wins, are expected to continue their momentum on the road.
