SPRING VALLEY – Defense and timely passing carried the No. 9-ranked Mount Miguel Matadors to a 14-10 victory over No. 11 Torrey Pines on Friday night in a San Diego County top-10 showdown.

Quarterback Jeremiah Loper threw for 251 yards and both Mount Miguel touchdowns, connecting twice with A.J. Logan, who finished with 105 yards receiving.

Logan’s 20-yard catch gave the Matadors (3-1) a 7-3 lead in the third quarter, while his 15-yard reception with four minutes left provided the winning margin after Torrey Pines (2-2) briefly pulled ahead.

The Matadors’ defense set the tone in a low-scoring first half that ended with Torrey Pines leading just 3-0 on a 22-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Despite Mount Miguel’s offense moving inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line before a pair of misfired snaps pushed them back, the defense kept the deficit manageable.

Mount Miguel totaled 40 tackles, including 14 solo stops and five tackles for loss.

Senior Malachi Jackson led the way with eight tackles, while senior Frank Fanua had six tackles and a half-sack.

Seniors Zane Rottier and Jordan Fuga, along with junior Delontay Williams, each recorded a tackle for loss.

Rottier and junior Gianni Porfilio each forced fumbles, helping the Matadors keep Torrey Pines in check.

The defense allowed just one touchdown all night, a short pass into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter that briefly gave the Falcons a 10-7 advantage.

But Loper and Logan answered immediately.

The left-handed quarterback zipped a pass to Logan, who caught it at the 5-yard line and powered through a defender to score the go-ahead touchdown. Senior Clint Ettleman converted both extra points on the night for Mount Miguel.

The Matador defense closed it out, with Fanua’s sack in the fourth quarter helping stall the Falcons’ final drive before Torrey Pines turned the ball over on downs.

The win was Mount Miguel’s second straight over a top opponent following last week’s 21-0 shutout at Loyola of Los Angeles.

Ranked No. 9 in the county, the Matadors have allowed just 10 points in their last two outings combined.

Mount Miguel will face another ranked opponent Friday when it travels to meet No. 13 Poway.
