2025 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL
LA JOLLA 40, GROSSMONT 28

LA JOLLA — One hundred and one years ago, Grossmont and La Jolla met on the football field for the first time. The Foothillers swept both games in 1924 under legendary coach Jack Mashin, including a 30-0 victory in the Vikings’ first-ever contest.
On Friday night, the two schools renewed their century-old connection, but this time La Jolla came out on top, handing Grossmont its first loss of the season, 40-28.
The programs continued to meet until 1929 with Grossmont winning all the meetings, but La Jolla would win several times over the next couple of decades until the series was put on ice for the most part by the mid-50s.
The Vikings stormed out to a 20-0 lead before the Foothillers mounted a rally sparked by their defense.
Grossmont’s Drew Sasena intercepted a pressured throw at the La Jolla 29-yard line, and moments later, A.J. Hooker punched in a 4-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion cut the margin to 20-8 with 5:24 left in the first half.
Grossmont closed the gap further on a 24-yard touchdown by Corbin Dow, who finished with 122 total yards. Still, La Jolla carried a 27-20 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth, junior quarterback Tyler Holmes put the Foothillers ahead, 28-27, on a read-option keeper. Holmes led the way offensively with 196 passing yards and 73 rushing yards on the night.
The lead was short-lived, however, as La Jolla answered with a go-ahead touchdown under the four-minute mark, then tacked on another score late to close out the victory.
Despite the defeat, Grossmont received strong defensive play from Colton Burke, who recorded four tackles, including one for loss, while also forcing a fumble.
Grossmont (2-1) will look to rebound next Friday on the road at Otay Ranch. The Falcons enter the contest at 1-3, giving the Foothillers an opportunity to bounce back before league play.
