SAN DIEGO – The West Hills Wolf Pack once again found themselves in position for a breakthrough win, but a late touchdown lifted host Morse to a 19-16 victory on Friday night.

Senior kicker Christian Slojkowski provided much of the scoring for West Hills, drilling field goals of 44, 44, and 34 yards. His steady leg kept the Wolf Pack in the game from start to finish and underscored why he is considered one of the top kickers in San Diego County this season.

West Hills opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Slojkowski connected from 44 yards out for a 3-0 lead. Morse answered later in the quarter on a short rushing touchdown following a long pass play, taking a 7-3 advantage.

The Wolf Pack put together another promising drive in the second quarter, but a fumble at the goal line turned into a touchback — the second such result for West Hills in the last three weeks. The defense kept the game close, highlighted by a pass knockdown in the backfield, and the halftime score remained 7-3.

Slojkowski struck again in the third quarter with another 44-yard kick to trim the deficit to 7-6.

Then in the fourth, senior running back Jacob Romeo powered in for a touchdown, and Slojkowski added his third field goal of the night from 34 yards, helping West Hills take a late 16-13 lead.

Morse, however, responded in the final minute. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Esmailian connected with standout senior Superior Garror, who scored his third touchdown of the game to put the Tigers ahead for good, 19-16. West Hills blocked the extra point but was left with only 24 seconds to mount a final comeback.

Junior quarterback Evin Dill led the offense with 106 rushing yards on 13 carries, while adding 47 passing yards. Romeo finished with 30 rushing yards and the team’s lone touchdown, while senior Julian DeBeneditto added 62 yards on the ground. In all, the Wolf Pack rushed for 230 yards as a team.

Defensively, junior Zack Waters recorded a sack, and West Hills also got contributions with a blocked kick and a pass breakup.

The Wolf Pack, now 0-4, have been within striking distance in recent weeks, but costly turnovers and late-game breaks have continued to haunt them. Still, Slojkowski’s performance offered a clear bright spot, as his three long-range field goals gave West Hills a chance to knock off Morse until the closing moments.
