SANTEE – The showdown of unbeaten teams turned one-sided Friday night as the Olympian Eagles pulled away for a 35-9 win over the Santana Sultans at Santee Community Stadium.
Santana struck first when junior quarterback Ethan Miller connected with Denton Goar on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter. The play was set up by a defensive stop that included a sack by the Sultans, and Goar made a sharp move on his route to get wide open for the score.
From there, however, Olympian took control. The Eagles answered with a 15-yard touchdown to tie the game, then added two more scores before halftime – including one in the final minute of the second quarter – to take a 21-7 lead into the break.
Early in the third quarter, Olympian extended the margin on a pick-six, stretching the lead to 28-7.
Santana’s defense came up with a safety late in the period, but the Eagles responded with another touchdown pass early in the fourth to close out the scoring at 35-9.
Miller finished with 120 yards passing and one touchdown for Santana (3-1), while Goar caught five passes for 58 yards and the first-quarter score.
Sophomore running back Julian Mayers led the ground game with 58 yards on 17 carries. On special teams, Goar added 106 yards on kick returns, while Kolten Thornton contributed 77 return yards.
Defensively, Tatum Morehouse stood out for the Sultans with seven tackles, including 3.5 for loss and a sack. Senior Jordan Gillissie also added eight tackles and forced a fumble.
The Sultans totaled just 59 rushing yards on 28 carries and were intercepted twice.
In a game where neither team looked particularly sharp, Olympian (4-0) managed to capitalize on key mistakes, while Santana struggled to sustain drives and fell behind quickly after the opening quarter.
Santana will look to regroup this week on the road against Fallbrook (1-3), where the Sultans are expected to be slight underdogs on Friday night.
