EL CAJON – The El Cajon Valley Braves are finding their stride just in time for the Grossmont Valley League regular season.

After knocking off Orange Glen a week ago for their first win of the season, the Braves made it two in a row Friday night with a 32-23 victory over Castle Park in a non-league clash.

It marks the first time El Cajon Valley (2-3) has strung together consecutive wins since the fifth game of the 2023 season, when the Braves opened the year 4-1.

The Braves struck first on defense when senior Jaquari Wash delivered a sack that jarred the ball loose, allowing junior Janvier Kashindi to scoop it up for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Wash later added a 22-yard scoring strike to junior Amir Miller, pushing the advantage to 14-0.

Castle Park (1-4) answered in the second quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Evan Lopez, but El Cajon Valley responded quickly.

Wash flipped a short screen to senior Vave Mossman, who broke free for a 28-yard touchdown that made it 21-7 Braves at halftime.

El Cajon Valley extended the margin to 24-7 early in the third quarter on a 30-yard field goal by freshman kicker Jacob Bickett, who finished 3-for-3 on PATs and added both of the team’s conversions on the night.

The Trojans, however, mounted a rally. Lopez connected with sophomore receiver Aiddien Smith for a 41-yard touchdown bomb, then after recovering a Braves fumble, hit another deep ball to that set up a short rushing score by Diego Perez. With the successful conversions, Castle Park closed within 24-23 late in the third quarter.

But the Braves regained control in the final period.

After forcing a turnover on downs, El Cajon Valley marched inside the 10, where Kashindi capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. Mossman added the two-point conversion reception, stretching the lead to 32-23.

From there, the Braves’ defense closed the door, with Wash and the front line applying steady pressure.

El Cajon Valley finished with 50 total tackles, including 12 from senior Leo Jones and 10 from senior Paul Marcelin, while Wash recorded two sacks.

Kashindi again led the ground game with 151 yards on 15 carries, giving him 467 yards on the season. El Cajon Valley’s rushing attack piled up 215 yards overall and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt.

Afterward, Braves head coach James Simon praised his team’s resiliency.

“Team fought through adversity, defense played well in the beginning, and a couple big plays made it a close game, but through adversity many of our players stayed together,”

El Cajon Valley will look to continue its momentum as the Braves aim for their first three-game win streak in two years when they host Santana in the Grossmont Valley League opener in two weeks.
