LAKESIDE — El Capitan continued its winning surge Friday night, shutting out Monte Vista, 38-0, in a Grossmont Conference crossover game behind a balanced rushing attack and a suffocating defense.
The Vaqueros (3-2) won their third straight game after an 0-2 start, leaning on the ground game to take control.
El Capitan rushed for 202 yards, led by sophomore Michael Castillo, who gained 89 yards on just nine carries with a touchdown.
Senior Brody Copp added 38 yards and two scores, while sophomore Micah Clark chipped in 23 yards and a touchdown.
El Capitan struck on its opening series when senior Spencer Chastang intercepted a pass to set up Castillo’s 5-yard touchdown run.
Chastang also added a 4-yard rushing score in the third quarter and caught a 19-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Hayden Passanisi, who finished with 80 yards through the air.
Copp scored twice on the ground, while kicker Ryder Powers was perfect, hitting all five PATs and a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros closed the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run in the final minutes.
The El Capitan defense was just as dominant, holding Monte Vista (3-2) to 91 total yards and forcing three turnovers.
Brewin Ford, Vincent Busby, and Matthew Eckis each recorded a sack, while Ford also forced a fumble. Chastang collected two interceptions, and Powers added 47 punt return yards to flip field position.
Monte Vista’s big highlight came on a 53-yard completion in the second quarter, but the Monarchs failed to capitalize, stalling inside the red zone. Defensive back Fadili Ibochwa had an interception for the Monarchs, but the offense never found its footing.
The Vaqueros have now outscored their last three opponents 76-21 after dropping their first two contests. They will carry momentum into next week’s rivalry game against West Hills (0-4) for the Tony Burner Memorial Trophy. El Capitan won last year’s meeting, 41-0.
Monte Vista will have a bye week before opening Grossmont Valley League play at West Hills on Oct. 3.
