2025 GROSSMONT COLLEGE FOOTBALL
GROSSMONT 48, LA VALLEY 10
EastCountySports staff report
EL CAJON – Quarterback Melvin Spicer IV accounted for four touchdowns as the Grossmont College Griffins rolled to a 48-10 non-conference victory over LA Valley on Saturday afternoon at the G-House.
Spicer threw for 293 yards and two scores, then added two short touchdown runs as the Griffins (3-1) built a commanding lead and never looked back. The win keeps Grossmont’s momentum going into National (Southern) Conference play.
The Griffins struck immediately when Spicer hit Elijah Realzola for a 59-yard touchdown just 75 seconds into the game. Later in the first quarter, Spicer connected with Isaac Syph on a 33-yard scoring strike for a 14-3 lead.
LA Valley (1-3) briefly made it 14-10 early in the second quarter behind a touchdown pass from Caleb Crider to K’Shaun White, but the Griffins seized control with 13 unanswered points before halftime.
Darick Dubose Jr. powered in from four yards out, and kicker Tyler Haley added field goals of 30 and 36 yards in the closing minutes to make it 27-10 at the break.
Grossmont’s defense then smothered the Monarchs in the second half, allowing just four rushing yards on 35 carries and forcing two fumbles.
The Griffins piled up 16 tackles for loss and four sacks, led by Lincoln Chukwuemeka (seven tackles, 4 TFLs) and Keanu Pettiford (six tackles, 21-yard sack, interception). Hayden Clark also picked off a pass.
Spicer capped two long drives with one-yard keepers in the third and fourth quarters, while backup QB Kelsey Munro came in late to toss a 34-yard touchdown to Devin Caminong to close out the scoring.
Grossmont finished with 475 yards of total offense compared to just 150 for LA Valley. Realzola had four catches for 75 yards and a score, while Ayden Billups added six receptions for 62 yards.
Haley was nearly perfect, going 6-for-6 on PATs and 2-for-3 on field goals, finishing with 12 points. He also handled punting and kickoffs.
The Griffins received votes in this week’s JCAB poll but remain outside the top 25.
Around the county
SAN MARCOS (Sept. 20, 2025) — No. 21 San Diego Mesa built a big halftime cushion and held off a late Palomar rally to earn a 28-21 road win on Saturday night in the Comets’ Alumni Night contest.
After falling behind early, the Olympians answered with 18 straight points in the second quarter, including a three-yard touchdown pass, a successful two-point conversion, and a dramatic 93-yard fumble return that flipped momentum and sent Mesa into the break up 25-7. A field goal in the fourth extended the lead to 28-14 before Palomar drew within a score late, but Mesa’s defense held firm to secure the victory.
Mesa (2-2) finished with 285 total yards, highlighted by 172 through the air on 12 completions. The Olympians now turn their focus to building on the strong conference start when they return home next week.
