Diminutive Retzloff gains first-ever GVL win on late safety

2025 EAST COUNTY PREP GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

EL CAJON — West Hills senior Irelyn Retzloff, the most diminutive member of the Wolf Pack, registered the single biggest play in the brief history in the closing moments of the school’s flag football program.
Retzloff, a 4-foot-10 (58 inch) safety, surprisingly charged forward for a rare blitz from the Pack secondary, breaking a tied ballgame with a game-winning saftey for a stunning 20-18 triumph over host El Cajon Valley at Priest Field.
The victory was the first-ever for West Hills (3-4 overall, 1-1 league) in Grossmont Valley League competition.The Braves (4-7, 1-1 GVL) fell out of their brief, 2-day stay in first place.
Following key interceptions by Ella Moutaw(14) and Elleigh Hernandez (6), Wolf Pack senior Irelyn Retzloff (1) registered a safety in the final minute to break a tie and gain a 20-18 GVL victory over ECVHS.
Retzloff’s plan was simple yet effective.
“When we lined up, I switched with one of out girls up front,” said Retzloff. “When I rusged up the middle, veryything just opened up and I got the safety.”
Early on, the Wolf Pack took a 6-0 lead on the first of two scores by Lexi Nelson, both on long runs.
Nelson raced 59 yards around the left side to open the scoring. Howeverm the Braves oulled even before the first quarter ended.
ECVHS also has a n opportunity to grab the lead in the second quarter, but consecutgiv plays on West Hills — one on defense, then on on offense — place the visitors back in front.
Sophomore defensiv e back Ella Moutaw intercepted a Braves pass just in front of the end zone to keep the contest tied. On the next snap, Nelson raced 74 yards for the score.
ECVHS still has anothern chance to pull even, reaching the Wolf Pack red zone, but wthout any tme outs remaining, the clock expired when inside the Pack-10.
West Hills eventually took an 18-6 lead, thanks to an interception by junior D-back Elleigh Hernandez.
However, El Cajon Valley scored twice inthe fourth period, buyt failed to take the lead as both sides missed three PAT convrsions each.
West Hills believed they took the lead in the final minute on a 4th-abd-goal snap, but the linesman ruled the ball0carier was four feet short of the goal line.
However, the ensuing saftey gave West hills the “W.”

FLETCHER HILLS — Say what you want about the performance by Steele Canyon in an ugly, league opening loss to Granite Hills on Tueday. But give the Cougars credit for what it did after initially trailing, 18-0, and took the momentum into Thursday’s upset victory.
After shutting out the Eagles over the final three periods on Tuesday,10th-ranked Steele Canyon ran its shutout streak to seven consecutive quarters by with surprisint shutout of No. 4 Grossmont, the defending Grossmont Hills League champions.
Steele Canyon moved to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in GVL action, moving towith a half-game f idle Granite Hills. The Foothillers (13-3, 1-1 GHL)) saw their 8-game league win streak snapped.
Helix 32, at Santana 27
SANTEE — Helix, the lone first-year program in the Grossmont Hills League against programs which fuielded teamspreviously, shocked Santana into thw Scotties’ debut following a first-eound bye on Tueday.
Thus, the Highlanders and Granite Hills are tied at 1-0 in GHL play.
Game reports are expected by Friday afternoon.
Valhalla 19, Canyon Hills 12
RANCHO SAN DIEGO — After opening the season winless in five starts, Valhall (*3-7-1) is now on a 3-2-1 run after nipping the Canyon Hills Rattlers in Thursday’s (Set. 25) non-league contest.
