CHULA VISTA – For the second straight week, the Helix Highlanders were shut out, falling 13-0 to Mater Dei Catholic on Friday night. The setback dropped the Highlanders to 1-5, their worst start since 2005 when they finished 2-7-1, winning only their first and last games of the season.
It has been rare for Helix to stumble this often in a single season. In the 75-year history of the program, the Highlanders have lost at least five games just 13 times.
The back-to-back shutouts for Helix were the first suffered since Weeks 2 and 3 of 1996.
Mater Dei Catholic (3-3) leaned on senior running back Jordan Dumaran, who pounded out 118 yards on 24 carries. Noah Cook had a standout two-way night, catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Victor Voneiff while also recording six tackles and three sacks to anchor the Crusaders’ defense.
Helix was limited to under 125 total yards. Still, the Highlanders showed fight on defense.
Junior linebacker Jeremy Davis led the way with 12 tackles, including one for loss.
Donte Wright and Jace Sells each came up with interceptions as Helix pressured Voneiff throughout the game.
Sophomore lineman Bodie Friend added two sacks, while Diego Robinson and DeAndre Wilson also recorded quarterback takedowns.
Mater Dei Catholic built a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, then stretched it in the third with Cook’s touchdown grab. A 20-yard field goal later in the quarter provided the final margin.
Despite creating turnovers, Helix couldn’t capitalize, with red-zone chances stalling due to penalties and missed connections.
The loss comes a week after Helix fell 49-0 at home to Cathedral Catholic, when the Dons jumped out early behind a 41-yard touchdown run by Brady Palmer and never looked back. Cathedral added long scoring plays from Isaac Cook and multiple touchdowns from Honor Fa’alave, handing the Highlanders their most lopsided defeat of the season.
The Highlanders will now turn their attention to Grossmont Hills League play, starting Friday night against rival Mount Miguel at 7 p.m. as Helix looks to reclaim the Claymore Sword.
