SPRING VALLEY – For the first time since the 1986 and 1987 seasons, Mount Miguel has defeated Helix in consecutive matchups, holding onto the elusive Claymore Sword, the perennial rivalry trophy that has rarely changed hands in the last 30 years.
The Matadors claimed a 42-14 victory over the Highlanders on homecoming night, continuing a recent trend of Helix struggling to regain control in the long-dormant rivalry.
Helix, now 1-6 on the season, struck first when quarterback Lee Norman-Lester connected with Jacob Andrew-Johnston for a 7-0 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
But Mount Miguel responded with a flurry of big plays before halftime that turned the contest decisively in their favor.
Quarterback Jeremiah Loper found Parris Vernon on a key completion to set up a touchdown pass to A.J. Logan, tying the game at 7-7 with 4:39 left in the half.
The Matadors then capitalized on a spectacular play from Texas A&M commit Brandon Arrington, who reversed field on a short pass to reach Helix territory, and Loper hit Logan again on fourth down for a touchdown, giving Mount Miguel a 14-7 lead.
Mount Miguel’s momentum surged further moments later as Loper found Logan for a 66-yard touchdown strike, the Boise State-bound receiver’s ninth touchdown in four games, pushing the lead to 21-7.
Gianni Porfilio added another score on a pick-six just before halftime, sending the Matadors to the locker room up 28-7.
In the second half, Mount Miguel maintained control.
Andre Jackson connected with Tmarrion Williams for a fourth-quarter touchdown, and a late Helix rushing score was followed immediately by Arrington’s electrifying kickoff return for a touchdown, cementing the 42-14 final.
Loper finished with 214 yards and three touchdown passes on just 17 completions, while Logan caught six passes for 135 yards and two scores.
Mount Miguel totaled 338 yards of offense, while Helix managed 228.
The victory improves Mount Miguel to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Grossmont Hills League and marks their fourth win in five games. Mount Miguel travels to Granite Hills, which had a bye this week, poised to test their high-powered offense against the Eagles’ defense.
Helix, 0-1 in the league, will look to regroup as they host El Capitan next Friday.
