EL CAJON – Junior Tyler Holmes is the quarterback driving the Grossmont High varsity football team, and if Friday night was any indication, it’s time for everyone to start getting to know his name.
In the Grossmont Foothillers’ Grossmont Valley League opener, Holmes led Grossmont to a 38-8 victory over Valhalla, combining precision passing, smart scrambling, and clutch two-point conversions to keep the Hillers rolling.
Fans who aren’t yet familiar with Holmes might want to start paying attention: he threw for 193 yards and three touchdowns on Friday night while completing 15 of 25 passes.
Holmes connected with senior Colton Burke on a 23-yard third-and-9 touchdown early in the second quarter.
Burke, a senior, also delivered key plays on defense, prompting coach Anthony Lawrence to praise his efforts:
“Colton Burke played great on defense. Defense played a great game.”
Holmes later found senior Randy Ballard for a 25-yard touchdown with just eight seconds left in the first half.
In the third quarter, junior A.J. Hooker scored on a 19-yard catch-and-run to make it 38-0, completing a first-half and third-quarter offensive surge that essentially put the game out of reach.
Running back Corbin Dow contributed 86 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while the duo of Dow and Hooker combined for a receiving touchdown and multiple two-point conversions to round out the Hillers’ 140-yard ground attack. A healthy portion of Holmes’ passing yards—83 in total—went to Ballard, who also hauled in a touchdown.
Grossmont’s defense, meanwhile, was dominant.
The Foothillers limited Valhalla to just 2.6 yards per carry on the ground, anchored by Gage Weichelt and a pass rush that included Ryder Robinson, Vinny Michelson, and Maddox Yeargan, each recording a sack.
Valhalla’s offense was largely stifled, managing only 121 total yards, with junior Liam Hypes rushing for 116 yards and scoring Valhalla’s lone touchdown in the third quarter.
Quarterback Jackson Newman completed just 1 of 5 passes for 19 yards, while senior Giacomo Lupo added 38 passing yards on 5 completions for VHS.
With the win, Grossmont improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, extending their streak in the series against Valhalla.
The Hillers have now won six straight against the Norsemen and seven of the last nine meetings. Valhalla falls to 1-5, enduring its fifth straight loss.
Next week, Grossmont faces off against Santana in a matchup of two of the three undefeated teams at 1-0 in the competitive Grossmont Valley League, setting up what promises to be an early-season clash between league strongholds.
