SANTEE – After a five-game losing streak to start the season, the West Hills Wolf Pack finally found the end zone at the right time, edging Monte Vista 7-6 Friday night in a Grossmont Valley League opener.

The victory not only snapped the Wolf Pack’s skid but also put them atop the league standings at 1-0, tied for first in the competitive GVL.

The 7-6 win was West Hills’ lowest-scoring victory since defeating Morse 7-0 in 2024, and one point shy of the WHHS record for fewest points in a win, which was 6 against El Capitan in 2015. But the narrow margin was enough for the Wolf Pack to get their first league victory of 2025, putting their preseason slump aside.

West Hills (1-5, 1-0 GVL) and Monte Vista (3-3, 0-1 GVL) were locked in a defensive struggle from the outset.

Monte Vista had multiple chances early, including a fourth-down attempt inside the West Hills 12-yard line late in the first quarter, but could not convert.

West Hills’ early 32-yard field goal attempt by Christian Slojkowski also missed, keeping the game scoreless through the first half.

Monte Vista’s Deon Hunter nearly broke the stalemate early in the second half with a 60-yard run down to the West Hills 23-yard line, but the Monarchs’ field goal attempt hit the upright.

The Monarchs moved the ball effectively through the air, as quarterback Derrick Taylor completed 7-of-10 passes for 105 yards, but West Hills’ defense, featuring sacks from E.J. Lee and Zack Waters, continually forced stops and prevented Monte Vista from putting points on the board.

The game’s first points came on a critical special teams play. Monte Vista’s punt was muffed by the Wolf Pack, and senior Anthony Gastelo scooped up the live ball, racing 15 yards for a touchdown. The point after was partially blocked, giving Monte Vista a 6-0 lead.

West Hills responded with a clutch, methodical drive late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Evin Dill, who rushed five times for 39 yards and completed 9-of-15 passes for 149 yards, directed the drive efficiently.

Dill connected with several receivers, including Zack Marticorena (2 receptions for 36 yards), Anthony Rosolino (2 for 35 yards), Jacob Romeo (1 for 26 yards), Jacob Timmerman (2 for 17), and Brayden DeAngelis (1 for 8).

Lee turned in the biggest catch of the night for 27 yards down to the Monte Vista 6, and Dill finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Slojkowski’s extra point gave the Wolf Pack a 7-6 lead, which held until the final whistle.

West Hills’ running game also contributed on the drive, with Romeo carrying the ball 8 times for 29 yards, helping sustain possession and keep Monte Vista off the field.

With the win, West Hills sits tied for first in the Grossmont Valley League and will look to carry momentum into its next matchup against Valhalla at 7:00 p.m.

Friday. Monte Vista will aim to rebound as they take on rival El Cajon Valley at 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Despite the low score, West Hills’ victory was a testament to patience, opportunistic play, and timely execution.

The Wolf Pack showed they can compete in the league and capitalize when it matters most.
