SPRING VALLEY — The Monte Vista Monarchs returned to their winning ways Friday night, using a steady ground game and stingy defense to blank visiting El Cajon Valley, 27-0, in a Grossmont Valley League matchup.
The Monarchs (4-3, 1-1 GVL) snapped a two-game skid behind a commanding performance from Dupree Flenoid, who rushed for 97 yards on 14 carries and scored once.
Quarterback Derrick Taylor added a pair of short touchdown runs and threw for another score, giving Monte Vista a much-needed bounce-back victory after a pair of tough league-opening losses derailed their early-season momentum.
Monte Vista established control early, with Taylor punching in a score in the first quarter and another before halftime as the Monarchs built a 13-0 advantage. Flenoid kept the chains moving throughout, wearing down the Braves’ defense behind an offensive line that set the tone in the trenches.
While the Monarchs didn’t share many details beyond their touchdowns, the scoreboard told the story — a complete, physical effort that continued their recent dominance in this matchup.
Monte Vista has now defeated El Cajon Valley three straight times, including a 40-12 win last season, and nine of the last 13 meetings.
For El Cajon Valley (2-5, 0-2 GVL), it was another night of solid individual efforts overshadowed by missed opportunities.
The Braves were able to move the ball at times, particularly through the air, but couldn’t finish drives against a disciplined Monte Vista defense.
Freshman quarterback T.J. Ibrahimi showed poise in extended action, completing 8-of-15 passes for 80 yards, while senior receiver Vave Mossman continued his strong season with five catches for 79 yards, providing most of the Braves’ offensive highlights.
Junior back Janvier Kashindi, who entered the game averaging over 80 yards per contest, was held to 27 yards on nine carries, though he added a reception and played both ways effectively.
Defensively, the Braves were led by sophomore Jaih Groom, who racked up 13 total tackles, and senior Paul Marcelin, who added nine stops.
Senior Jaquari Wash was active as well, contributing five tackles and two tackles for loss, while junior Rashaunn Barr came up with an interception in the second half to stall a Monte Vista drive. Barr now has three interceptions this year.
Despite the shutout, El Cajon Valley continued to show growth and resilience. Their young core — including Ibrahimi and several underclassmen — gained valuable experience under the Friday night lights in Spring Valley.
Monte Vista’s win evens its league record at 1-1 and keeps the Monarchs within reach of a top-three finish in the Grossmont Valley League standings. They’ll now turn their attention to a key matchup with Santana next week in what could be a pivotal test of their late-season form.
El Cajon Valley, meanwhile, will look to regroup and reignite its offense when it meets rival Valhalla next Friday night in another East County showdown that will be a bit of a litmus test for the two clubs considering their proximity in the ratings.
