EL CAJON – Valhalla put an emphatic end to its six-game losing streak Friday night, blanking El Cajon Valley 38-0 to claim its first Grossmont Valley League victory of the season. The win was the program’s first shutout triumph since 2018.
The Norsemen (2-6, 1-2 GVL) were nearly unstoppable on the ground, amassing 351 rushing yards, the most they’ve posted in a single game since the start of last season.
Liam Hypes led the charge with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, while also contributing 47 receiving yards.
Jackson Newman complemented the performance with 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries and added 122 yards through the air, completing five of eight passes.
El Cajon Valley (2-6, 0-3 GVL) had a brief spark with Janvier Kashindi, the Braves’ standout running back, breaking off a big gain to Valhalla’s 40, but the drive ended in a punt.
The scoring began late in the first half after a big pass from Newman to Marcus Martinez, who hauled in the ball and picked up a huge gain to the Braves 36.
Liam Hypes then powered through the line from 15 yards out, extending the lead, and Newman added a 7-yard quarterback keeper earlier in the drive.
Anderson Turner capped the first half with a 38-yard field goal, sending Valhalla into the locker room with a commanding 17-0 lead.
Valhalla’s punishing ground game only intensified in the second half.
Hypes and Newman continued to slice through the Braves’ defense, combining for five rushing touchdowns on the night.
Valhalla finished with 473 total yards and five rushing touchdowns, including contributions from Gideon Hypes (47 total yards) and senior backs Ahmed Husaini and Giacomo Lupo, who combined for 39 yards on limited touches.
The Norsemen defense was equally dominant, holding the Braves to 116 rushing yards and just 21 passing yards.
Valhalla recorded four tackles for loss, with standout performances from Brody Shartel, Lorenzo Matos, and Giacomo Lupo. Marcus Martinez added an interception to highlight a near-perfect night for the defense.
Despite a valiant effort fromKashindi, who rushed for 71 yards, the Braves were unable to find the end zone, marking their third straight loss.
The victory gives Valhalla momentum heading into next week’s rivalry matchup at Monte Vista, while El Cajon Valley looks to rebound against Grossmont.
