EAST COUNTY FEARLESS FORECASTER

It’s rivalry week in Santee, and the Mayor’s Cup is on the line.
Santana and West Hills meet Friday night in the annual battle for Santee bragging rights — and though Grossmont looks to have the Grossmont Valley League title firmly in its grasp, the winner of this one will stay alive for a possible share of the crown.

West Hills celebrates with the Santee Mayor’s Trophy during the pandemic-delayed spring season of 2021.
Santana (5-3, 2-1 GVL) at West Hills (2-6, 2-1 GVL)
This one means everything in Santee — and not just because of the hardware.
Friends and frienemies wait each year to face off on the gridiron, and this time it’s on the blue turf of West Hills.
West Hills has won eight of the last ten meetings since 2015, including last year’s 38-21 triumph.
But Santana comes in with renewed momentum after taking down Monte Vista last week, 14-7, behind scores from Maddox Esoo, who returned a blocked field goal for an 81-yard touchdown last week and Caleb Carnes, who added a rushing touchdown.
The Sultans will need more of that spark to slow down Evin Dill, who led West Hills last week with 156 total yards (64 rushing, 92 passing) and two touchdowns despite a 48-27 loss to Grossmont. It was West Hills’ highest point total of the season, and it came against the league’s best team.

West Hills with the Mayor’s Cup in 2017.
Santana’s Ethan Miller, the Grossmont Valley League’s passing leader (1,025 yards, 11 TDs), will look to get things going early against a West Hills defense anchored by ballhawk E.J. Lee (three INTs).
The Sultans’ Tatum Morehouse (35.0-yard punting average) and Wolf Pack kicker/punter Christian Slojkowski (37.7-yard average) could make this a battle of the best statistical punters in the East County in what figures to be a low-scoring game.
West Hills also won in 2023, 14-0 in West Santee. Santana’s last win in the series was in 2022 – a 10-3 win at Community Stadium.
Fearless Forecaster: West Hills 19, Santana 17.
No. 17 Steele Canyon (7-1, 1-1 GHL) at Helix (3-6, 0-2 GHL)
Don’t let the records fool you — Helix is having one of its roughest seasons in decades, though they just picked up a forfeit win from El Camino (Week 1 game won by El Camino, 31-21) to move to 3-6.
Meanwhile, Steele Canyon is enjoying its best campaign since 2019, led by quarterback Gavin Caha (1,331 yards, 15 TDs) and a stingy defense allowing only 11.4 points per game.
The Cougars suffered their first loss of the year last week to Mount Miguel, 28-21, while Helix fell 40-14 to Granite Hills.
Still, Helix got touchdowns from Jacob Andrew-Johnson and Jordan Lindley, and linebacker Jeremy Davis continues to shine with 69 total tackles to lead the Grossmont Hills League.
Helix has had trouble with opposing teams’ pass rush and the Cougars bring one of the county’s best units for getting after the quarterback with Sebastian Castellon, Donte Brown and Gunner Minich each with five sacks this season, while teammate Tyree Zarkaryan has four sacks this season.
This one has the makings of a close game with the Highlanders at home and Steele Canyon trying to stay alive for a share of the title in the Grossmont Hills League race, with a meeting against three-time defending champ Granite Hills to close it out next week.
Fearless Forecaster: Helix 28, Steele Canyon 27.
No. 8 Granite Hills (5-3, 2-0 GHL) vs. El Capitan (4-4, 0-2 GHL)
At El Capitan, 7 p.m.
Granite Hills is rolling. Quarterback Zachary Benitez, the county’s top passer at 317 yards per game (23 TDs), threw for 287 and four scores in a 40-14 rout of Helix last week. Zhedan Smith added two touchdowns, while Tristan Diaz (52 receptions, second in San Diego County) and D.J. Wilkins (470 yards, 4 TDs) keep the air attack humming.
El Capitan fell 41-21 to Helix despite strong efforts from Hayden Passanisi (827 yards passing this season) and defenders Brewin Ford (4.5 sacks) and Matthew Eckis (4 sacks).
It’s hard to see anyone slowing down the Eagles right now — especially a team that’s dropped six straight to Helix and now faces the Hills’ hottest squad.
Fearless Forecaster: Granite Hills 49, El Capitan 7.
Valhalla (2-6, 1-2 GVL) at Monte Vista (4-4, 1-2 GVL)
Monte Vista comes in off a tough 14-7 loss to Santana, while Valhalla snapped a six-game skid with a 38-0 shutout of El Cajon Valley.
Liam Hypes ran wild for the Norsemen with 177 yards and two touchdowns, and Jackson Newman added 120 rushing yards and three scores.
The Monarchs’ defense has been tough all year (13.8 points allowed per game), but will have their hands full with Valhalla’s rejuvenated run game. Brody Shartel leads Valhalla’s defense with 61 tackles.
Monte Vista beat Valhalla 38-21 last season, and should have just enough again.
Fearless Forecaster: Monte Vista 27, Valhalla 17.
No. 21 Grossmont (7-1, 3-0 GVL) at El Cajon Valley (2-6, 0-3 GVL)
Grossmont is steamrolling through the Grossmont Valley League, led by quarterback Tyler Holmes (953 yards, 13 TDs, just two INTs) and running backs A.J. Hookier (543 yards) and Corbin Dow (509 yards, 4 TDs). The Foothillers are coming off a 48-27 win over West Hills.
El Cajon Valley, meanwhile, was shut out by Valhalla 38-0, despite solid defensive efforts from Rashaunn Barr (East County-best 4 INTs) and Vave Mossman.
Grossmont’s Ryder Robinson leads the East County with 10 sacks, and the Hillers have all the momentum heading into the final stretch.
The Foothillers are heading toward their best season since 2016, when they finished 9-2, including a second-place finish in the Grossmont Hills League (4-1)
Fearless Forecaster: Grossmont 56, El Cajon Valley 7.
No. 5 Point Loma (8-0, 3-0 Eastern) at Christian (2-6, 0-3 Eastern)
At Granite Hills
This has been a season for the history books at Point Loma. The Pointers are 8-0 for the first time since 1937, their best start since 1966, and only the fifth time in school history they’ve gone unbeaten through eight games (joining the great Pt. Loma teams of ’37, 1939, 1946, and 1965).
They’ve done it behind quarterback Ryder Watson (343 yards, 5 TDs last week) and receiver Romeo Carter, who exploded for 214 yards and six touchdowns against Madison. Defensively, Matteo Correia has been a force with five-plus tackles in seven straight games and two INTs last week.
Christian’s Kaleb Runkle (1,600 yards passing, 14 TDs) will look for his favorite target Kai Rosier (776 yards, 6 TDs, 229 return yards, plus an 80-yard kickoff return TD last week), but the Pointers are on a historic run and hungry for Open Division attention.
Fearless Forecaster: Point Loma 38, Christian 15.
Rock Academy (4-4, 2-1 Sunset) at Mountain Empire (6-2, 3-1 Sunset)
Mountain Empire’s dream season hit a bump with a 41-0 loss to Maranatha Christian (4-0 Sunset) in the biggest game of their year — a possible playoff preview in Division 5-AA.
Still, it’s been a tremendous campaign, led by Elisha Lashone Robinson (860 yards, 10 TDs, 14th in the county).
They’ll look to rebound at home against Rock Academy, which fell 41-7 to Kearny.
The Redhawks’ defense features Jason Landman (70 tackles) and sack leaders David Oney and Maxwell Anderson (4 each).
These teams met last year with Rock winning 24-6, but this version of Mountain Empire is far tougher — and they’ll prove it at home.
Fearless Forecaster: Mountain Empire 33, Rock Academy 24.
Tri-City Christian (0-8, 0-5 Sunset) at Foothills Christian (0-8, 0-4 Sunset)
At Seau Field
Both teams are searching for their first win as Foothills Christian showed some life last week in a 38-23 loss to O’Farrell Charter, which improved to 3-1 in the Sunset League, as they Knights scored their most points of the season.
Running back Jack Sudi (564 yards) leads the offense for FCHS.
Tri-City Christian was routed 52-0 by Victory Christian, and has struggled on both sides of the ball. T
This may be the lowest-rated matchup in the county this year, but it’s a huge opportunity for the Knights to finally celebrate.
Fearless Forecaster: Foothills Christian 26, Tri-City Christian 19.
