LA MESA — The Helix Highlanders capped their regular season with one of their most complete performances of the year, edging visiting Steele Canyon 39-34 in a back-and-forth Grossmont Hills League thriller on Friday night at Hart Stadium.
Senior quarterback Lee Norman-Lester powered the Highlanders (4-6, 2-2 GHL) with a spectacular dual-threat performance, rushing for 128 yards on just seven carries while also passing for 171 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-14 completions.
Norman-Lester’s all-around play once again proved decisive — Helix is undefeated this season when he surpasses 80 rushing yards.
Helix set the tone early when Norman-Lester connected with Jeremy Davis for an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The Highlanders continued to control the game on the ground, as Donte Wright scored three rushing touchdowns and finished with 94 yards, while Jordan Lindley added 52 yards and two scores.
The Highlanders rolled up 443 yards of total offense, including 272 rushing yards, mixing explosive plays with clock-controlling drives.
Davis also starred on defense with seven tackles and a sack, while sophomore Jeremy Robinson contributed 79 yards receiving.
The Highlanders’ defense delivered just enough stops to fend off a relentless Steele Canyon rally in the second half.
The Cougars (7-2, 1-2 GHL) were led by junior quarterback Gavin Caha, who continued his standout season by throwing for 300 yards and four touchdowns while completing 19-of-27 passes.
Caha spread the ball around to four different receivers for scores — Josiah Stocker (65 yards, TD), Jacob Henton (55 yards, TD), Noah De Arcos (63 yards, TD), and Nico Jara (34 yards, TD). Junior Marcus Hunt added 87 rushing yards and a touchdown, helping Steele Canyon stay within striking distance until the final minutes.
Helix built leads of 18-7 at halftime and 25-20 after three quarters before extending the advantage to 39-20 midway through the fourth.
Steele Canyon rallied late with a pair of touchdown passes from Caha to pull within five, but Helix held the ball for some of the closing minutes to seal the win. Still, the Cougars had one last possession that was thwarted by the Highlanders.
The Highlanders, who defeated Steele Canyon for the second straight season, closed their regular season on a high note after enduring one of the toughest schedules in the section.
Both teams are expected to qualify for the CIF San Diego Section Division II playoffs, where they’ll look to carry their offensive momentum into postseason play.
