EL CAJON — The Grossmont Foothillers kept their late-season surge rolling on Friday night, overwhelming El Cajon Valley 60-14 to clinch at least a share of the Grossmont Valley League championship and move one step closer to an outright title.

Junior quarterback Tyler Holmes turned in a flawless performance, completing all 12 of his passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground.

The win improved Grossmont to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the GVL, their best start since 2016, and are likely to qualify for the CIF Division II playoffs.

The Foothillers wasted no time taking control. Holmes connected with Dallin Mackay for an 8-yard touchdown to open the scoring, then found Kenny Krauss from 30 yards out later in the first quarter to make it 22-0 after a pair of successful two-point conversions.

After El Cajon Valley answered with a kickoff return for a touchdown, Grossmont immediately countered with an electric 90-yard kickoff return by Gage Weichelt, stretching the lead to 30-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, sophomore running back Corbin Dow continued his breakout season, rushing for 108 yards on just eight carries, including a 25-yard touchdown run.

Holmes added a rushing score of his own, and Max Bewley caught a touchdown pass to cap the Foothillers’ offensive onslaught.

Defensively, Grossmont continued to dominate. Colton Burke returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown, and Hudson Hager added another interception.

Jaylen Williams forced a fumble, while the front seven, led by Ryder Robinson, Jay Smith, and Rans Jirjees, kept El Cajon Valley from sustaining any offensive rhythm.

Grossmont’s special teams were just as explosive.

In addition to Weichelt’s return, Jonah Martinez ran back a second-half kickoff 80 yards for another touchdown — part of a 13-point special teams contribution that helped the Hillers reach a season-high 60 points.

At halftime, Grossmont already led 53-7, effectively sealing the outcome.

With one week remaining in the regular season, the Foothillers have secured at least a share of the league crown and can claim the outright GVL title with a win next Thursday against Monte Vista.

Meanwhile, El Cajon Valley (2-7, 0-4) fell behind early and couldn’t recover, though the Braves showed resilience with a pair of touchdowns, including the early kickoff return and a rushing score in the third quarter.

Grossmont now turns its attention to closing out the regular season with momentum — and a chance to enter the postseason as one of Division II’s most balanced and explosive teams.
