EL CAJON – It’s been a rough stretch for the Christian High Patriots, and on Friday night at Valley Stadium, they ran into one of the hottest teams in the county.

The visiting Point Loma Pointers – now 9-0 and ranked among San Diego’s best – kept their perfect season intact with a 24-0 victory over the Patriots in Eastern League play.

Christian (2-7, 0-4 Eastern) dropped its fourth straight home game this season.

The Pointers, who last started 8-0 in 1966 and haven’t had a 9-0 mark since the 1930s, used a balanced attack to wear down the Patriots.

For Christian, junior quarterback Kaleb Runkle completed an efficient 15-of-21 passes (71.4%) for 86 yards. His top target was junior Kai Rosier, who caught six passes for 31 yards and added 48 more yards in returns.

Freshman Julian Morones provided a spark with 115 all-purpose yards, including an impressive 43-yard kickoff return.

On the ground, Runkle added 37 rushing yards, while Morones chipped in 20.

Senior Chase Togerson and Hank Houston each recorded sacks to highlight the Patriots’ defensive effort, with Togerson also leading the team with seven total tackles.

Morones made his presence felt on both sides of the ball, tallying six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Despite the final score, Christian’s defense battled to contain Point Loma’s big-play capability, especially early on.

The Pointers led just 7-0 after one quarter and 17-0 at halftime before closing the game with a late touchdown in the fourth.

Point Loma quarterbacks Henry Heuser and Ryder Watson combined for 280 yards through the air and three touchdowns, connecting with Leo Sahd, Graham Murdock, and Tanner Spradling for scores.

Senior standout Romeo Carter led all receivers with nine catches for 120 yards, while the Pointers’ defense once again dominated, allowing fewer than 10 points per game on average this season.

With one week left in the regular season, the Patriots will look to regroup and end the year on a positive note. Christian travels to face the San Diego Cavers (1-8, 1-3 Eastern) on Thursday night at Balboa Stadium — a matchup that gives the Patriots their best chance yet to earn a league victory.

The Cavers have allowed just 14.7 points per game this season, so the Patriots’ offense will need to execute efficiently to close the season strong and carry momentum into the Division 3 playoffs.
