PINE VALLEY — After suffering a lopsided 41–0 defeat at the hands of Maranatha Christian last week, the Mountain Empire RedHawks bounced back Friday night with a 30–22 win over Rock Academy at home, showing resilience and the kind of toughness that has defined their turnaround season.
“It was another sloppy game, but we pulled away with a win,” head coach Cameron Keller said. “We were able to run the ball with no problems.”
Mountain Empire (7–2, 4–1 Sunset League) leaned on its dynamic rushing attack, led by sophomore Elisha Lashone Robinson, who carried 16 times for 138 yards and a touchdown, averaging an impressive 8.6 yards per carry.
Ammar Mahasin added a 47-yard touchdown rush, while quarterback Chance Ross contributed a rushing score of his own and threw for 91 yards and a touchdown, completing 4-of-7 passes.
“Later on in the fourth, they started loading the box, so we went to play action and hit Michael Noble on a 50-yard bomb to help us stretch the lead. We had a key defensive stop late in the fourth to seal it,” Keller said.
Noble finished with that reception for 40 yards and the crucial score. Junior Ponce also chipped in with 51 receiving yards to keep the offense moving.
Rock Academy (4–5, 2–3) didn’t go quietly.
Zayden Campbell rushed 27 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns, and also added 32 receiving yards.
Quarterback Alec Endicott completed 10-of-13 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Despite the efforts, the Warriors couldn’t overcome Mountain Empire’s balanced attack and timely defense.
The RedHawks amassed 286 total yards, with 195 on the ground, while the defense made key stops when it mattered most, including late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
Mountain Empire has now won four of its last five games, rebounding nicely from the Maranatha setback and improving their playoff positioning in Division 5-AA.
Mountain Empire will host Foothills Christian next Friday at 7 p.m., while Rock Academy will return home to face Maranatha Christian, a team that has scored at least 31 points in each of its last three contests.
The RedHawks are still alive for a share of the Sunset League championship with Maranatha Christian heading into the final night of the season, but they would need Rock Academy to spring an upset should they defeat Foothills Christian as expected on the final week of the season.
Mountain Empire is likely to be the No. 3-seed in the 5-AA playoffs and aim for a championship run against top seeds Maranatha Christian and Palo Verde Valley.
