The East County prep football season concludes this week with Week 10 matchups that could determine league co-championships, playoff seeding, and postseason positioning.

Thursday and Friday feature marquee games with Granite Hills in the Grossmont Hills League and Grossmont in the Grossmont Valley League, each capable of clinching outright titles with a win.

Meanwhile, Mount Miguel and West Hills will be playing with potential championship implications on the line on Friday night should the leaders slip on Thursday night, and most of the teams will find out their playoff pool and position by Sunday.

Thursday, October 30

No. 7 Granite Hills (6-3, 4-0 GHL) at No. 18 Steele Canyon (7-2, 3-1 GHL)

This rivalry has been dominated by Granite Hills in recent years, and the Eagles enter this game having already clinched at least a share of their fourth straight Grossmont Hills League championship.

Zach Benitez leads the county with 308 passing yards per game and 26 touchdowns this season, with a dynamic receiving corps featuring Tristan Diaz (57 receptions, 453 yards), D.J. Wilkins (470 yards), and Zhedan Smith (423 yards).

Steele Canyon counters with Gavin Caha at quarterback, who has thrown for 1,631 yards and 19 touchdowns, and a stout defensive line that has been nearly a match for the Eagles.

Granite Hills suffered a slow start last week against El Capitan, hinting Steele Canyon could challenge them early. However, with the Eagles’ balance of speed, talent, and experience, they should assert control by the second half.

The Eagles are sure to be a top-four seed in the Division 1 playoffs, while the Cougars can play spoiler here and are probably going to be in the playoffs in Division 2, although an upset win could likely advance them into the Division I bracket.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: Granite Hills 38, Steele Canyon 20

Monte Vista (5-4, 2-2 GVL) at No. 19 Grossmont (8-1, 4-0 GVL)

Grossmont has been a model of consistency this season, led by Tyler Holmes, who has thrown for 1,391 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just three interceptions.

Corbin Dow leads the GHL with 675 rushing yards, complemented by A.J. Hooker’s 589 yards on the ground.

Grossmont’s Ryder Robinson leads the East County with 10 sacks.

Monte Vista has been known to be capable of pulling off big road upsets, but this year the Foothillers’ depth, speed, and home-field advantage should prove decisive.

Grossmont is likely headed to Division 2 playoffs, while Monte Vista will qualify in Division V.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: Grossmont 35, Monte Vista 14

Valhalla (2-7, 1-3 GVL) at Santana (5-4, 2-2 GVL)

Santana, a probable Division 4 playoff team, will look to finish league play at 3-2.

Ethan Miller leads the Grossmont Valley League with 1,025 passing yards.

Santana’s Jordyn Gillissie leads the Grossmont Valley League with 8 1/2 sacks.

Brody Shartel leads Valhalla with 70 tackles.

Valhalla would need a substantial upset to move into Division V playoff contention.

The Norsemen defeated Santana last season, 31-14

Fearless Forecaster PICK: Santana 28, Valhalla 13

Christian (2-7, 0-4 Eastern) at San Diego (5-4, 1-3 Eastern)

Christian has struggled this season in the midst of a tough Eastern League schedule but faces a San Diego team of similar caliber, giving them their best chance at a league win.

Kaleb Runkle has thrown for 1,685 yards for the Patriots, with Kai Rosier adding 807 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

San Diego will be favored but Christian’s ability to move the ball and play loose could make for a competitive contest. They’ve already had a big road upset win this season.

A victory here wouldn’t just improve Christian’s league record—it could also enhance their Division 2 playoff prospects, but as for now, they are likely to be in the Division 3 field.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: San Diego 27, Christian 21

Friday, October 31

West Hills (3-6, 3-1 GVL) vs. El Cajon Valley (2-7, 0-4 GVL)

West Hills’ title fate depends in part on Grossmont’s result, but the Wolf Pack have momentum from winning the Santee City Cup last week and are seeking to at least finish second in the league standings, which would be a terrific result following an 0-5 non-league campaign.

The Wolf Pack won last week’s city championship over Santana on a 25-yard field goal in overtime by Christian Slojkowski, a senior.

That could be the emotional letdown the Braves could use from their opponent, especially if the league champ is already decided on Thursday.

Plus, the Braves are likely to miss out on the postseason without a massive upset, although an win would make a great end to their campaign should they still fall short of qualfying in Division 5.

El Cajon Valley’s Paul Marcelin leads the conference with 77 total tackles, including seven for loss.

Janvier Kashindi, of the Braves, is the Grossmont Valley League’s leading rusher.

El Cajon Valley hasn’t beaten West Hills since their historic 2005 season but also tied them 24-all in 2007.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: West Hills 31, El Cajon Valley 12

Mount Miguel (6-3, 2-1 GHL) at El Capitan (4-5, 0-3 GHL)

Mount Miguel has been one of the East County’s most efficient offenses, led by Jeremiah Loper, who has 19 touchdown passes, 3 interceptions, and over 1,800 passing yards, with A.J. Logan contributing 647 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

El Capitan showed last week they can compete with the teams in the Hills League, pushing Granite Hills into the second half.

Brewin Ford leads the El Cap defense with 70 tackles, 14.5 for loss, and 7 sacks.

While Mount Miguel is favored, this could be a highly-competitive game at least into the second half as the Vaqueros attempt to spoil Mount Miguel’s title hopes depend on the Eagles’ result on Thursday.

Mount Miguel is likely to be a top four seed in the Division 1 playoffs with a win here, along with Granite Hills, possibly putting the teams on course to meet late in the postseason.

Meanwhile the Vaqueros have been respectable in GHL play despite an 0-3 record coming in and figure to be a strong championship contender again this poseason in the Division 4 playoffs, although an upset win would surely place them in the Division 3 pool, the division El Capitan won last postseason.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: Mount Miguel 33, El Capitan 20

Mountain Empire (7-2, 4-1 Sunset) at Foothills Christian (1-8, 1-4 Sunset)

Foothills Christian is coming off its first 11-man football win since 2021, but Mountain Empire has been one of the more improved teams in the entire county after winning just one game last season.

Jason Landman, of the RedHawks, leads the East County with 86 total tackles, and Maxwell Anderson had 5 sacks for the RedHawks.

Foothills Christian’s Jack Sudi has rushed for 723 yards, setting up a showdown of good running games, as the RedHawks feature the East County’s leading rusher in Elisha Lasone Robinson, who has 1,033 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Mountain Empire should secure a second-place finish in the league if they can win here against the Knights on Senior Night at Seau Field.

The teams last met in 2012 when Mountain Empire won here 66-44, as the RedHawks won three-straight meetings (’10-’12), the only times these teams have met.

Fearless Forecaster PICK: Mountain Empire 34, Foothills Christian 17
