SAN DIEGO – The Helix Highlanders closed out their weekend at the Scripps Ranch Tournament with one of their most complete defensive efforts of the young season, grinding out a 50–37 win over the host Falcons on Saturday behind a balanced scoring night and a relentless effort on the glass.
Helix (5–2) set the tone early with physical half-court defense and never allowed Scripps Ranch (3–4) to establish rhythm, holding the Falcons to just 29 percent shooting while forcing 23 turnovers.
Senior Sergio Vazquez delivered a strong, efficient performance, finishing with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting while battling inside for three boards.
Sophomore Trey Cavazos added 13 points, knocking down three triples and going a perfect 2-for-2 at the line.
Senior Jason Black provided another key boost with nine points and three steals, repeatedly turning defense into transition opportunities that helped Helix maintain separation throughout the game.
The Highlanders’ defensive rotations were sharp all afternoon, highlighted by senior Ziggy Robinson, who filled the stat sheet with four assists, three steals and five rebounds, injecting energy during several key stretches.
Junior Brian Hammerstrand fought for six boards off the bench, while sophomore Jaden Harden added four rebounds and a steal in his most productive outing of the tournament.
Scripps Ranch kept within range behind senior Drew Corso (eight points) and senior Kihei Blas (nine points), but the Falcons struggled to generate consistent perimeter scoring, finishing just 5-of-24 from deep. Helix’s interior defense and ability to finish possessions—posting a 31–29 rebounding edge—proved decisive.
Helix closed the game out at the stripe, hitting 11 of 13 free throws, and outpaced the Falcons 12–10 in made two-point field goals despite taking 14 fewer attempts. The Highlanders continue to show signs of a group built on depth, defense, and physicality as they approach the heart of December tournament play.
