Two East County teams walked away with momentum on Wednesday evening: El Cajon Valley rushed its breakout season forward with another gritty home victory. El Capitan moved to .500 with its most convincing road performance of the young campaign.
EL CAJON VALLEY 58, HIGH TECH MESA 52 — El Cajon Valley’s impressive start to the season continued as the Braves edged High Tech Mesa, 58–52, to move to 6–1 and remain unbeaten at home (4–0).
Senior Shay Hopson led ECV with 27 points, while Amir Eation added 20 and Amir Miller finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists.
Hopson knocked down three three-pointers, and ECV made enough late stops to hold off the still-winless Thunder (0–5).
El Cajon Valley’s efficiency showed in the numbers — 19 made two-pointers and consistent interior production — as the Braves continued one of the best early-season turnarounds in the section under head coach Jamaal Branch after the team posted a 5-20 season in 2024-25.
EL CAPITAN 71, CLASSICAL ACADEMY 61 — El Capitan delivered one of its most complete performances of the young season, riding a dominant second-half surge to pull away from Classical Academy, 71–61, and improve to 3–3 overall.
Holding a 38–25 halftime lead, the Vaqueros answered every Caimans push in the third quarter behind timely shooting from Jason Wilson and Trystan Billinger.
Wilson buried three triples after halftime and added clutch free throws down the stretch, while Trevin Curo powered inside with multiple key buckets in the fourth to help keep El Cap comfortably in front.
Classical Academy made repeated runs — trimming the margin to single digits several times — but El Capitan’s balanced scoring and steady response to each surge proved decisive as the Vaqueros improved to 2–0 on the road.
