SANTEE — After a rough opening stretch to the season against some tough opponents, the Mount Miguel Matadors finally broke through on Wednesday night, securing their first win of the season with a convincing 47–33 road victory over West Hills in a Grossmont Conference matchup.
Mount Miguel entered the game at 0–6, having faced a schedule that included Calexico, OLP, Hilltop, Canyon Crest, Valley Center, and Canyon Hills—all teams off to decent starts this winter.
But against the Wolf Pack, the Matadors looked energized, composed, and steadily in control from the opening tip.
The Matadors jumped out to a 13–7 lead after the first quarter, using active defense and balanced scoring to set the tone.
West Hills made a push in the second, but Mount Miguel carried a 21–18 advantage into halftime before tightening the screws in the third and fourth quarters.
Senior Kimari Shannon powered the victory with 14 points, attacking the paint and delivering key shots whenever the Pack tried to close the gap.
Fellow senior Evalani Ariel added 11 points, including six free throws, while junior Maliyah Bradley gave Mount Miguel an interior spark with eight points of her own.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Basa (7 points) and junior Milani Murray (6) rounded out a five-player scoring effort that stayed steady all night.
Mount Miguel outscored West Hills 26–15 in the second half, holding the Pack to only six points in the final period as the Matadors secured the win with their best defensive quarter of the season.
For a program rebuilding with a younger roster, Wednesday’s win was a needed step forward—and a sign that the early-season learning curve is starting to pay off.
After winning 22 consecutive Grossmont League championships, the Matadors have gone just 9-56 since.
