MOUNT MIGUEL 56, RAMONA 38

SPRING VALLEY – Mount Miguel’s girls varsity basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Monday night, pulling away from Ramona for a 56–38 victory at home.
After a tightly contested opening quarter, the Matadors steadily took control behind balanced scoring, aggressive rebounding and a strong showing at the free-throw line to secure the program’s third win of the 2025–26 season.
The game was even after one quarter, with both teams tied 9–9, but Mount Miguel began to create separation in the second.
The Matadors outscored Ramona 17–10 in the period, using defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities to take a 26–19 lead into halftime.
That momentum carried into the third quarter, where Mount Miguel added another 15 points to push the advantage into double digits. By the fourth, the Matadors were firmly in control, closing the game with a 15–7 run to seal the 18-point win.
Junior Maliyah Bradley led all scorers with 16 points, doing much of her damage at the free-throw line, where she went 12-for-14.
Senior Evalani Ariel added 12 points and was a steady presence on both ends of the floor, while senior Kimari Shannon chipped in eight points.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Basa scored nine points, and the Matadors received additional contributions from Toriana Dedmon, Nyla Maga and Milani Murray, underscoring a balanced team effort.
One of the biggest differences came at the foul line, where Mount Miguel shot 70 percent (21-of-30), consistently capitalizing on Ramona fouls.
The Matadors also controlled the glass, finishing with 24 total rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end, which helped fuel extra possessions and keep Ramona from mounting a comeback.
The win improved Mount Miguel to 3–7 overall and marked an encouraging step forward after a challenging start to the season.
The Matadors opened the year with a string of losses against tough competition, including Calexico, Academy of Our Lady of Peace, Hilltop, and Canyon Crest Academy.
Since then, signs of progress have been evident, with wins over West Hills, Mar Vista, and now Ramona, along with several competitive league games.
Individually, Mount Miguel has been led this season by Bradley (8.9 points per game), Ariel (8.3 ppg) and Shannon (7.9 ppg), with Basa and Dedmon also providing consistent scoring.
Ariel and Bradley have anchored the rebounding effort, helping the Matadors average more than 27 rebounds per game.
Monday’s victory also served as a confidence boost heading into the next league matchup.
Mount Miguel is scheduled to host Hoover on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., looking to build on the momentum from its most complete performance of the season.
If the Matadors can continue to defend, rebound and share the scoring load as they did against Ramona, they appear poised to make the second half of the season far more competitive, especially when they reach league play.
